AM - 14 miles. Warmed up 4 miles. LT Reps: 6 x 1 Mile5:07, 5:04, 5:04, 5:02, 5:03, 5:02. Rest interval was ~0.3 mi jog back to the start. Cooled down 2.5 miles.

Good session this morning. Was shooting for HM "date pace" (~5:05-5:10) and went a little faster, but it was a very controlled workout. No hammering the last rep, tried to keep them as consistent as possible.

PM - 35 minutes pool running w/ Andrea. For now, I'm trying to give my legs 24 hours of rest after harder workouts.

I've been thinking a lot about what I have planned for this training cycle. I feel like I have learned a lot about training for the marathon and there are a lot of things I want to incorporate. However, this is actually a somewhat shorter buildup, so I'm not going to be able to get everything I want in there. The key is finding the mixture of the most important elements, figuring out how they fit together (that's what coaches get paid the big bucks for!) and executing them properly. The other thing to consider is how this marathon builds into the rest of the year... in 2012, I was in fantastic shape in March/April and really never got to a higher fitness level. For this upcoming year, I want it to be more of a progression... I'll run the marathon in March, then probably two national championship races in the spring/summer (25K & HM), and then potentially go for the OTQ in the fall season. There has to be more cycling up and down in order to run better as the year goes on. So I'm not going to play all my cards in these next two months - some things will get saved to provide a different type of stimulus down the road a bit. Its exciting, because while its taken me a while to figure it out, I think I've fine-tuned my approach (or at least have a plan) and can make a big jump in 2013. The conversations that Andrea and I have (especially during these afternoons in the pool) - breaking down all of my ideas, simplifying, and letting the most important things rise to the top - are incredibly valuable.

We had similar workouts today- great minds think alike- Of course, I'm trying to bust a move before a 12 month hiatus, but I like your idea of a slower progression so you have more to give in the most important races of 2013. I also think throwing down a marathon early in the year will definitely help your strength and stamina in the half/25K. All you'll need to add is a bit more speed. I'm excited for your breakthrough year next year!

That's the idea - training for the marathon should really improve my high end aerobic ability... I need to make sure I hold back just a bit, though, and not let the training destroy me and take a long time to bounce back from. That's the balance I'm after. If I do it right, I should be able to improve across the board.

I don't regret going "all in" for Boston last winter... it didn't turn out how I hoped, but I learned I was capable of even more than I thought in terms of work capacity during the training.

Holy crud Jake you are running SO WELL right now! I love your effort based approach to training and also your plan for 2013. Very smart and I for one cannot wait to watch what you are able to do in 2013.

It's going to be an exciting year for you, no doubt.

Good plan for the year. Just keep it healthy. The best progress is made when your able to link together as many training cycles as you can without injury or mishap. You've had a couple years of solid growth. Keep it rolling and you could be on the verge breaking into a class!

First, great workout. The 6x1 and 8x1 at LT pace are great workouts. With progression you'll be able to do that same workout with 1 min rests and probably faster in just a few weeks. You're coming around quickly. No surprise there. I like your thoughts on the training as well. Personally I prefer a bit of a shorter buildup for the marathon and still succeeding at other distances like you say. It's hard enough just to make it to the start line healthy and then weather can mess up your day. Finding the right mix is always tough and seems to be an ongoing experiment for all of us. This has the makings of a great cycle for you. I can feel it.

Excellent workout today Jake! And I know that your well thought out approach will pay off big time for you in 2013.
