AM - 5 miles easy on campus. Another 10 hour night of sleep. I am racking these up lately! This afternoon is the "dress rehersal" half-marathon tempo. I basically got the idea for this workout from the Hanson's standard 26.2K @ MP, although I feel like 16 miles is a bit too long at altitude in terms of recovery... so for the sake of symmetry I scaled it back to 13.1.

PM - 15 miles. The BIG tempo run, as described above, out on the frontage road between the airport and Saltair. I ran 13.1 miles in 1:09:16 (Average pace = 5:17 / mile).

I am ready. The cake is done baking, and its out of the oven now. All that's left to do is let it cool off, then add some frosting and sprinkles over the next couple weeks.

I really didn't want to crush this workout, just run it nice and controlled. My splits were: 5:21, 5:21, 5:20, 5:19, 5:18, 5:18, 5:13, 5:16, 5:17, 5:18, 5:18, 5:14, 5:13, :30. Very even effort. When I accidentally hit a faster mile in the middle, I was able to ease right back to the proper pace. As soon as I finished I drove back along the route and made sure Andrea and Emily B were doing OK, and drove alongside them as they ran their last couple miles. They had a great workout as well! We cooled down a mile in the dark together once they finished up.

If you told me at the beginning of May that I'd run 1:09:16 in a half-marathon RACE this year, even on an aided course, I would have been pretty happy with that. To run that fast during a workout, without pushing it too hard, during a stretch of 140 mile weeks... well, that's just cool! And it makes me feel very confident about my ability to execute a great race in 3 weeks.

I'm never able to hit marathon pace at altitude. Just to give you an idea. I did 14.6 at 5:53 pace prior to Boston 2010. I got hurt and missed the last 5 weeks of training (some running but no long runs). Yet I still ran 5:48 pace for the marathon and I was at 5:40 pace through 16.

Yeah I've talked to Paul about this and he said if you can run marathon goal pace + 5-6 seconds on tempos, that is a pretty good indicator of where you are at. I feel like that rule of thumb seemed right when we went down to Long Beach. That's why I'm feeling pretty confident after the two longer tempo runs I did last week.

Jake perfect workout and a great confidence booster! Now if only you could put yourself in a bubble to preserve everything and protect against sickness! I've become a handwashing fanatic since I'm around sick kids all day at school - not to mention I'm always working with computers (tons of germs on keyboards and phy.ed. equipment)!

You are ready and primed. You have but in a lot of hard work this year and will do great at Philly!

I have some Fastwitch, sounds like I have to try them out to see if they will be my replacement for the Tangent's I wear in marathons. The Miraage are ok, but just not a go to shoe for me.

From Jake K on Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 11:07:29 from 155.100.226.53

Thanks guys.

Erik I work in a HOSPITAL... germs everywhere! I think I'm just going to wear a surgical mask once we get to the last 10-12 days before the race.

Jeff you should definitely give the Fastwitch a shot... they are essentially just a lighter version of the Tangent. Perfect marathon shoe in my opinion. If only they still made them in the Vizipro Orange! If I make the trials I'm going to ask Saucony to make me a pair in the bright orange.

From Hamdog Alum on Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 12:43:57 from 68.185.190.140

Jake - good idea!

Jeff - I wear the Fasttwitch. Just picked up new pair to use for the Monumental. They've never given me a blister and they give just the right amount of shock absorption for the marathon and they feel light weight on the feet.

From Jake K on Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 12:57:33 from 155.100.226.53

The little bit of extra cushion in the Fastwitch really makes a big difference. When I run hard in the A3s or A4s, my feet can tell that I ran hard, even if its only 5-6 miles. For a race under a half-marathon, I can live with that. But my toes were really killing me in the final miles of the utah valley marathon... I'm hoping by switching to the FT, I can prevent that from happening this time around.

Jake - looks like everything (body and confidence) is totally ready. Now go and get it in a couple weeks!

From Steve on Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 13:15:42 from 12.54.212.2

Very cool workout!

From dutterman on Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 14:46:13 from 137.112.13.203

Jake, you running Monumental? I live in the Indiana area. I'll be running the half. Hitting 90 mile weeks for the first time ever in my 30 year career. Looking to have a breakthrough marathon to be a 21 year PR.

Good luck!

From Jake K on Fri, Oct 28, 2011 at 16:34:24 from 155.100.226.53

Dutterman - I'm running Philadelphia... but Erik (Hamdog Alum) is running Monumental
