Gotta give a shout to one of the young guys on the blog, Mike Finch, who signed w/ SUU earlier this week. I really liked what Coach Holt had to say:  ...it demonstrates how hard work and dedication (everyday, all the time - not just "when I feel like it commitment") really do pay off.

This is going to sound daft but what does it mean when you sign with a university/college? Don't you just run for the college where you go to study? Does Mike get his fees paid and a grant? How do you get signed etc?

"Signing" means a scholarship, so the athletic department is covering the costs of attending the university (tuition, etc). I'm not sure of the specifics of Mike's deal.

In the NCAA, track/XC teams are allowed 12.6 (wacky number) full scholarships. Often times bright kids who have their acts together can get a partial athletic and partial academic scholarship to cover pretty much all of their expenses.

So, does that mean if somebody signs for a college they have to meet certain criteria once they are there? Do they have to run so many races in certain times etc? Or, can the student do what they want?

You know I'm not really sure whether its guaranteed or not. I think each program / scholarship has different requirements in terms of staying in good standing w/ the team. I've definitely heard stories of athletes coming down w/ injuries and having to give up athletics, and their coaches still honored their scholarships. But if you just decide, for instance, you don't want to run anymore, I don't know how that works.

Really it does depend on the program and coach. A scholarship (signing) doesn't guarantee $ throughout college. Obviously a coach would probably pull the scholarship if you don't run (I've had an athlete that didn't meet the academic requirements of the school and lost his scholarship, bummer). Most scholarship are year to year and are contingent on your participation and meeting the standards (academic, athletic, and other) of the program.

Ya, i'm pretty happy i was able to get a good scholarship because i never got a job to save up for college because running took up a lot of time (yes coach, i know tyson did it with a job just fine) but it really helps so i can just concentrate on running when i'm in college...and school work of course :)
