First race of the year this morning out at the Saltair Palace. Great weather for a January race... it was pretty warm by the 10am start time.

Warmed up with Rob, did a few 30 second efforts, then we were off. Fritz and I ran together for the first mile. We had a nice tailwind and hit the mile in 4:46. Then Fritz dropped off a bit, and once we hit the turnaround (and headwind) I backed the pace off to more of a threshold effort. I felt like I had a few more gears in my legs, but just didn't mentally feel like suffering. I'm a baby!

Next two miles were 5:00 and 5:01. Last 0.1 was 31 seconds. Finish time of 15:20. I looked back at all the old results posted online from the winter series, and this ties the fastest time run on this course. I should have listened to Andrea and pushed the last bit a little harder! Fritz ran well and finished in 15:50.

Cooled down 6+ miles w/ Emily B, Devra, Allie, and James. A nice showing for the blog today - top 3 guys, Rob winning the masters race, Emily and Allie going 3-4 in the women's race. And Devra winning was great too - she's not on the blog but we run w/ her enough that she is still part of the crew!

This was a good first race of the year for me. Very controlled effort - I'm in a good place right now as I start the buildup towards Boston. Way, way, way ahead of where I was at this point last year.

Won a $100 New Balance gift card for my efforts (although I can't wear New Balance stuff... haha). And this was also apparently the RRCA state championship - so I'm the Utah State 5K champion, and I have a coaster to prove it! :-)

Fun morning. Andrea took a bunch of pictures. Here's her full gallery: SLC Track Club 5K ... Allie's pics from the finish are especially good.

PM - Busy afternoon! Came home, wrote this race report, then went to TCBY and met up with Allie, James, and Andrea's co-worker from Brazil. We filled up on Fro-Yo, then went up to Alta for the afternoon. They all snowshoed and I played around on my rando skis. Really nice to be up in the mountains on a beautiful afternoon. I have some good pictures and will post them tomorrow. Once we finally got down the canyon (traffic was a mess so we stopped at Snowbird for a while and got some hot chocolate), I got out for a 4 mile shakeout run and it felt good to stretch out my legs.

What kind of shoes are you wearing in these pictures?

From SlowJoe on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 15:42:16 from 74.195.74.62

Nothing says you've arrived as a runner as much as winning a championship coaster, congrats!

From Fritz on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 15:42:58 from 65.100.192.74

Great job Jake. Next year if I am lucky I hope to make it into that last picture (just rounding the corner of course).

I am a NB girl :D The gear can make a great gift for a family member. Christmas is only 11 months away. I think you are such a baby, jk. 5:00 then 5:01!!!! The record is just a bit of hindsight. Such a fast time, and better off than last year? That is awesome.

From RAD on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 19:46:24 from 98.202.23.178

wow - awesome race Jake!!! A champion among us! :)

From DaleG on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 19:47:05 from 66.87.64.164

Great job, Jake. That explains why no one showed up for the group run this morning. Jk ha ha. You will do incredibly at Boston.

From Cam on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 20:28:20 from 64.122.20.49

Sick run Jake! That's not far from what you ran just as a tempo last Saturday! I think you have few more gears left to say the least

From scottkeate on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 20:39:17 from 71.199.4.146

Nice run, Jake! Great effort. Not a bad way to jump into your push for Boston.

From Hamdog Alum on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 21:10:51 from 24.240.65.116

Nice warm-up race for the season. You should be setup well for this next phase of Boston training.

From Steve on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 22:22:34 from 66.87.65.20

I would have thought that's a record for that course. Impressive.

From Jon on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 22:41:43 from 98.71.175.203

Sweet- nice work, Jake.

From Jake K on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 23:23:22 from 67.177.21.60

Thanks guys! It was a fun day and great way to kickoff the racing season for me - last year when we ran the winter series 15K we were new to the area and didn't know anyone - so its a lot more fun now (mainly because of this blog) that I feel like we're a part of such a big group at these local races.

Mr. K - Those are the Saucony Type A4s. I think they are already rolling out a new version (A5s) soon. They are a pretty lightweight flat - I like them primarily for 5K/10K... I've worn them for a half. SlowJoe will tell you that they aren't cut out the marathon! :-)

From MatthewVH on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 23:26:20 from 207.224.207.31

Jake: Awesome, very impressive. Keep up the good work.

I'm the AZ state champion in Scrabble. Ask allie.

From Superfly on Sun, Jan 29, 2012 at 11:49:49 from 74.211.21.81

Great race. 5k's suck but it's fun for me to read about other people running them:). Good luck as you enter what seems to be a monster of a training phase before Boston.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Jan 29, 2012 at 12:35:21 from 74.195.74.62

You can run a marathon in them as long as you don't mind not being able to walk for days afterward!

From jtshad on Sun, Jan 29, 2012 at 17:02:31 from 69.20.183.178

Great time and effort, starting 2012 off with a bang. Looking forward to watching you in Boston!

Great race Jake you were really flying. Keep up the good work you are an inspiration to runners like me fairly new to the sport. Keep it up

From JulieC on Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 10:32:08 from 67.41.188.138

congrats Jake!! I like that your half marathon time and 5k pace are pretty close-- looking at your Long Beach race that is!! amazing!! according to McMillan I should be able to run a 5:28 mile (just one)--- so maybe one day you could pace me for that ONE mile.
