AM - Another ski tour which made me optimistic that winter still exists - soft snow, cooler temps. We skied in several directions around upper Silver Fork and off West Honeycomb. Great morning - three very nice powder runs and an adventure runout through the gully [4000'].

PM - 8 miles.

Took some photos on the ups, didn't fiddle with the camera too much on the downs...

Here's a training summary of the last 8 weeks. The main emphasis for the next 8 weeks will be quality long runs: extended steady state efforts + work at goal marathon pace. I'll mix in a couple easier overdistance long runs + shorter/faster sessions.

We never ski on Mondays!

AM - 12 miles with 4 miles at Steady State in 22:48 (5:42/mile avg). Tempo loop. Just something to bridge the gap until my next workout but not enough to tire myself out for the afternoon...

PM - Best skiing of the year. Left work early and knocked out four deep, light, glorious powder runs. STOKED. [3900']

AM - 23 mile long run w/ 16 miles steady state in 1:31:12 (5:42/mile avg). Tempo loop.

Other than mile four (5:37) every mile fell nicely into the 5:40-5:44 bucket. Excellent bike pacing once again by Andrea. Crazy that it's been warm enough for her to pedal all these longer efforts with me this winter, but I'll take it!

Another tough winter day in the mountain west...

PM - Ski tour, primarily in Silver Fork's West Bowl. Found some powder in the midst of all the slush. [2850']

Another beautiful day with plenty of those 360 views that Little Cottonwood Canyon tends to serve up...

It definitely felt like spring...

AM - 13 miles w/ 4 miles steady state (5:46/mile avg) on the tempo loop. I need 3-4 days between real workouts these days, but tomorow will be a lazy day with a red eye flight tonight so I threw in a couple slightly quicker miles.

PM - Skinned 3500' at Brighton w/ Andrea.

Redeye flight to Cancun. Got in, picked up some groceries, then headed down to the house in Puerto Morelos. Wandered around the town a bit. Lazy beach/pool day with lots of napping to recover from the flight!

AM - 22 mile long run (7:15/mile avg). Ran south from Puerto Morelos and found an incredible dirt/sand road that followed the beach. Sooooo humid but luckily had clouds blocking the direct sun for some of the time. Andrea rode along on a 40lb single speed beach cruiser with no brakes. Recovered with a pool cerveza and then a (naked) massage on the beach. When in Rome!

Drove down to Tulum for the second half of the trip. Even more beautiful further south. Rented bikes in the afternoon and went for a nice cruise.

Best day yet. Biked over to the Mayan ruins at Tulum and explored there for a while, then went for a long beach walk. Followed that up with a bike ride along the coast, and then to Gran Cenote for some swimming. Tulum's beaches are incredible... despite the recent seaweed bloom.

Got out to the Mayan ruins at Coba early to avoid the crowds. Explored the site for a while, then headed back to Tulum and spent most of the day at the beach, relaxing and strolling.

Final day of a great week in Mexico. Stopped in Akumal for a few hours on the way to the airport and went snorkeling in the Yal-Ku lagoon. Evening flight back to SLC and got home around midnight (unknowing carrying the plague).

PM - 2 miles. Hoped to do a more substantial run, but aborted and had to do the walk of shame back home. So while my health has improved somewhat, I'll have to call this Mexico Death Plague Day #4.

AM - 1 mile. Stopped and walked home. Did not turn the corner. Mexico Death Plague Day #7.

PM - 2 miles w/ Andrea. That's all I manage. Our fitness curves are converging. But at least hers is going in the right direction!

Started a potent antibiotic course in the afternoon. First time taking antibiotics since I was 8-9 years old, but my body is losing this battle and I needed some help.

Obviously this illness throws a big wrench into the marathon training, on the heels of not being in great shape to begin with, a relaxed week in Mexico, and however long it takes me to fully bounce back from this. I was hoping to return from vacation and really hit it for 4-5 weeks and try to make a jump. At this point, going for a PR in a month isn't remotely realistic (it's impossible)... but I'm OK with that. I'll do what I can to prepare and go over to Europe with the intentions of having a good time during the "work" week in Vienna leading up to London, and run the best I can in the marathon.

Since spring skiing is going to be non-existent this year (the season is already almost over, so unfortunately I don't think ski mountaineering objectives are going to be the focus of May weekends), I'll probably pick another race or two in May/June and have a bit of a spring racing season.

My weight chart for 2015...

The acute illness resolved a few days ago (+1 for medicine), but it's taking forever to get my energy and legs back. You know that drained, depleted death march feeling that happens when you're finishing a cooldown at the end of a really long workout or race? That's how the start of my runs have felt the past few days.

On the bright side it's great to be able to run with Andrea again! And to be honest that really makes up for the fact that this marathon block fell apart like it did. I'll happily take that tradeoff.
