AM - 7 miles easy + 4 x 8s hills.

I'm running the 5000m on the track tonight at the Utah Spring Classic. Free cookies and balloons, how can you beat that?

----------------------------------

PM - 9 miles. 3 up, 5K in 15:36, 3 down. We'll call that 3.1 miles at LT pace. I'm not really sure this is worth making a race report, but Andrea took pictures and because of that, I guess it counts. Hit the 1K in 3:01 and 1600 in ~4:50 (right where I wanted to be), but it was all downhill from there. The Idaho State guy took off and I mounted zero effort to go with him. Legs felt flat and my effort was pathetic. I deleted my splits off my watch immediately and hope that James does the same :-)

This was actually the first time I ran on the Univ of Utah track... its a really nice complex and as you'll see in the photos, quite an impressive backdrop with the mountains. I smiled at the camera towards the end (last photo) which shows how engaged I was in the race at that point.

Good luck tonight, Jake. That's a sweet taper:)

Great idea to throw in a 5000m track race as a training session - beats going out and doing a hard interval session on your own. Give it some root-toot.

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 10:57:14 from 67.177.11.154

Its a low key meet. I'm guessing most of the good runners will do the 800/1500, as no one wants to run the 5K at altitude.

My goal is to beat my last 5K split from the PF Chang's 1/2 marathon. If I do that, I'm on the right track. Been tapering all week for this!

I wanted to run the 5k tonight, but we have plans at 6 pm, and I think the 5k is around 7 pm. But I am going at 5 pm to see the 800m... One of the girls on the U team is going for the school record 2:06.99. So I probably won't stay long enough to see you, but good luck! Should be a prefect night on the track.

From RileyCook on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 11:03:47 from 132.3.45.78

Good luck. Can't beat a 5k on the track under the lights. Oh wait I just checked the schedule...5:40 is your race time.

I'm trying to predict your time in my mind, but to an extent that will depend on the field...

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 11:04:24 from 67.177.11.154

I was wondering if you might be running... the women's race is pretty late... guys are at 5:40 and the women are closer to 7pm.

The women's 800m will be pretty exciting if she goes for that. Hopefully some of her teammates will serve as sacrificial rabbits :-)

From Kassi on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 11:12:29 from 98.202.223.143

Oh good, then I will see your race!

I am guessing Andrea is going? It will be fun to see you guys.

The meet is pretty low key other than chasing down the school record in the 800. I think most of the U girls in the 5k are only running the first 3k... can't really run a PR on the mountain.

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 11:24:32 from 67.177.11.154

Yeah she'll be there. Official race photographer :-)

Utah gets to pick the events - they should have just made it a 3K if everyone is going to drop out anyways! Although 3K would probably scare me away and I'd be on the high school track by myself in that case.

we'll be there to cheer you on. i think james is bringing his union jack if you want to drape it over you on your cooldown.

good luck tonight.

Good luck tonight Jake!

Nice 5k the day after a 20 miler. Unreal.

From runningafterbabies on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 21:34:20 from 71.41.118.242

Beautiful pics, nice job Andrea. A solid effort and quality workout nonetheless. I think you could throw down a crazy fast 5k time on fresh legs.

From allie on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 21:38:55 from 97.126.220.245

i love that last pic with all the flower pots. james cleared the splits to get the hang time of the long jumpers, so you're good.

From Fritz on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 22:10:51 from 67.177.4.64

Ending a 100+ mile week with an afternoon 5k on the track isn't for the faint of heart. Nice effort out there.

From Rob Murphy on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 22:21:32 from 24.10.249.165

Nice job... 9 AM tomorrow?

From DaleG on Fri, Apr 12, 2013 at 22:41:25 from 152.216.11.5

Looks like a nice track. Way to go, Jake.

From Bam on Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 06:23:18 from 89.126.28.24

Wow, great pictures Andrea. What a setting for a track.

Good effort for a 5k at altitude on a flat track off the back of a tough week. That said, I can't believe that the fat kid beat you:)

Fat kid, if you read this, I'm only joking and I hope that Jake didn't pinch your very orange spikes:)

From RileyCook on Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 13:35:24 from 65.130.68.80

Nice work Jake. I had you predicted at 15:12, but I didn't take the large volume of quality you had this week into account.

From Jake K on Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 14:03:53 from 67.177.11.154

Ah we all know I don't run faster than HM pace :-)

From Christie on Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 14:26:00 from 74.213.202.246

I was going to say exactly what Fritz said... Nice work Jake.

From Jake K on Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 19:24:40 from 67.177.11.154

Bam - I was thinking how it was funny that you specified it was a "flat track"... surprised that we don't have downhill tracks in Utah, huh? :-)

From Lulu Walls on Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 20:47:48 from 166.70.240.95

Those are some seriously sweet shots! Who knew a track could be so pretty? Oh and nice work with the race too :)
