Photo from the start (SL Tribune). I just wanted to demonstrate that BJ is taller than me!

OK race today. I figured 1:07 flat would win it, and I was right... unfortunately my legs didn't have it in them.

I decided to take it out at an honest pace right from the start, basically to make Riley decide whether he was racing or just doing a workout. He came with me so I knew he was in it to win it as well. I had a small gap on him for ~3.5 miles, and we came through the 4 mile mark in 19:40. Then Riley threw down a monster surge (this was an impressive move... I honestly didn't think he'd maintain it as well as he did) and opened up a sizeable gap on me right away. The pace slowed a bit through the hills in the middle part of the course, and Brett Hales (who was lurking behind us in the faster opening miles) passed me ~10K. I maintained contact with Brett, and Riley was a good 70 meters out front. I tried to draw Brett back in on the 3300S downhill stretch, and closed the gap a bit. A little after 10 miles I threw in a surge, caught and passed Brett, and it seemed like Riley was coming back a little bit. For a minute I thought I might be able to reel him back in, but then I sort of lost momentum and the wheels came off ~11 miles. Riley ran strong to the line for the win, with Brett 10 seconds or so behind in second, and then about the same gap back to me in third.

So I'm obviously not thrilled with the outcome, but I was soundly beaten by two guys who were much better than me today. They earned and deserved the top 2 spots. I felt like I ran better today than I have in some recent workouts (and definitely better than the 5K last Friday), so hopefully I can build some momentum from here.

Afterwards I was borderline hypothermic in the cold rain so I went and did my cooldown on the treadmill at the gym. They should add a minute to my time for that! :-)

Andrea was riding in the pace car (driven by Amiee!) and took some photos. Everyone has snazzy new uniforms!...

Onward and upward, Jake! Not a shabby race, especially for going out as hard as you did (wowser!) -- those conditions look frigid!

Nice singlet!

From Dave Taylor on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 11:16:47 from 174.23.78.66

Just reading your report makes me struggle for breath. And I only went 10 this morning. Without the rain. Very snazzy gear though!

From steve ash on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 11:19:01 from 174.52.100.252

Considering the volume and the overall intensity/load of your training lately I'm pretty impressed by your performance.

From Tara on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 11:41:25 from 75.169.137.41

Geeze, that is a small time gap for the top 3. Glad you could find some light and build on it. I always admire that about you! Hopefully Andrea will be running it next year.

From allie on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 15:22:37 from 97.117.80.97

that's a cool photo, and an excellent demonstration. the next step is to determine if BJ is taller than rossy.

great job today. the new kit is indeed snazzy.

From RileyCook on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 15:23:06 from 65.130.68.80

Great race Jake. As always, it's fun running with you (especially since I get to steal Andrea's photos afterward).

I hope you finally got warm. Man it was freezing afterward! And sorry you missed your sweet medal afterwards, I'm sure that will be on your mind for quite sometime!

From SlowJoe on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 15:59:15 from 96.61.24.215

Nice race, Jake. Seems like you've had a big week with a lot of quality work. This was a great tuneup for your big races coming up.

From Jason D on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 18:13:27 from 24.1.80.94

This one still goes in the bank, Jake. Nice singlet. You guys are fast AND fancy!

From Jake K on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 18:16:20 from 67.177.11.154

I REALLY want to change the title of my blog to "Fast and Fancy" now!!!

From Jon on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 18:36:09 from 107.203.52.135

Still a good race, given how you've been feeling. The off days makes you appreciate the on days that much more.

From CollinAnderson on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 18:38:35 from 70.196.195.1

Nice race! You're in the middle of some big training, so this is solid!

From Toby on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 18:45:42 from 199.101.229.6

Nice race Jake! You fast guys sure make it look easy :)

From Jason D on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 20:13:47 from 24.1.80.94

If should be "Miles Make Champions, But Fancy Does Not Make Fast."

From Matt Schreiber on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 21:28:05 from 66.17.102.185

Great race Jake! Looks like a bunch of crappy weather got thrown at you today.

From Kendall on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 21:45:58 from 208.187.252.10

I don't know about "soundly beaten" you guys 1-2-3 within 26 seconds of each other. Great racing...and thanks for posting the photos!

From scottkeate on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 22:30:38 from 71.199.4.146

Great report as usual. I laughed out loud a couple of times. I like every photo I see of BJ at the beginning of races--you do look like a shrimp next to him.

I'd say you did pretty well with over 110 miles on your legs coming into the race. And would also argue the "soundly beaten" part as well. Hat's off to you for a superb effort and great race.

From MichelleL on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 07:56:12 from 42.3.85.107

Five mile shake out? Ha! If you had been 30 seconds faster (not a big diff in a half) would you be thrilled? I agree with Scott :D

From Jake K on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 08:06:45 from 67.177.11.154

I'd be thrilled if I was 2 minutes faster, probably not 30 seconds. I've run 1:06 at the end of a 120+ mile week before... so while not terrible, this can't just be chalked up to the mileage/workload either. Its just where I'm at right now, gotta keep plugging away and be patient.

From mike⇒nelson on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 10:23:47 from 98.202.247.25

I always love your reports, chock full of good photos! Good effort in nasty conditions.

From Steve on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 11:06:27 from 66.87.112.70

Very cool race Jake. It was a lot of fun running at the start and seeing you guys going at below 5 min pace. Amazing

From AngieB on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 16:32:27 from 174.253.177.68

I'm digging the new race singlet. Great race don't be sad about that. That's a very close great race:) way to hang tough.

From Matt Poulsen on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 17:30:28 from 98.202.242.213

Solid performance, Jake. Great re-cap. As the year goes on, many more a runner will be eating your dust.

From Fritz on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 17:36:15 from 74.82.68.144

Nice race Jake. That's a great time on that course, in those conditions and after some big training weeks. I am glad there is now proof that B.J. is taller than everyone else.

From Cam on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 20:07:47 from 65.130.250.245

Solid race.

so just gonna throw this out there... Lack of orange probably cost you the W.

From Bam on Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 04:13:41 from 89.126.28.24

Good effort Jake. It'll start to come good in a couple of weeks. Stay focussed.

From runningafterbabies on Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 08:09:26 from 71.195.219.247

I like your new outfit - but I'll miss the bright orange - you were so easy to spot. I think you are going to peak just at the right time for your key races this spring. Keep up the awesome work.

From Rachelle on Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 08:59:23 from 159.212.71.199

Looking snazzy in the new get up Jake! Considering all of the hard miles you've been putting in these past two weeks you cannot be too dissapointed. This definitely sets you up nicely for your upcoming races.

Country music half? Is this a new addition to the schedule.

From Jake K on Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 09:49:47 from 24.2.76.138

Andrea is seeing a surgeon in Nashville next week, and we're going there a few days early so she can see her family. The RnR coordinator was nice enough to give me an entry on last-minute notice since I'd be in the area. I'd rather run that race than do a couple solo hard workouts in the humidity down there.

Thanks for all the positive comments, folks.

I'll miss the bright orange a bit too.

From Superfly on Mon, Apr 29, 2013 at 17:15:40 from 74.211.21.81

Solid race man. Lots of cool pictures too. BTW BJ is taller than everyone:) The first time I raced him and he was running side by side I felt like there was a cyborg or robot next to me.

From Nate on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 13:51:54 from 142.105.170.212

Nice race and nice new uniforms. Good luck at RnR
