I wanted a progressive effort today, and executed that well. Targeted splits of ~26:00 at 5 miles, 25:15-25:30 for the next 5, and to not pull my hamstring in the last 5K. I ended up running 25:54 / 25:21 and then ~15:55 for the last 5K, with no injury re-occurrence. So, pretty much as good as it could have gone.

It was important for me to start conservative today, as I don't have the quality miles in my legs to really be gunning it from the start. So I did a shorter warmup (and didn't take my caffeine) so I'd be slower off the start. Came through the first mile in 7th place and there was already a big gap to the front pack. Moved up a bit over the next two miles, and I was in 4th when we crested the hill at 5K, but Josh/Jon/Riley were still way ahead (~20 seconds). Passed Riley at 6 and then caught Jon at ~11.5. Jon and I ran together until there was about a hundred meters left... I felt great and like I had a big kick in me, but I couldn't justify taking the chance. One place isn't worth another month of missing workouts, and Jon was very strong and would have been tough to take down anyways.

Splits - 5:13, 5:19, 5:16, 5:07, 4:58, 4:57, 5:06, 5:02, 5:08, 5:07, 5:15, 5:01, 5:04, :33 = 1:07:11. Miles 1-5 = 25:54, Miles 6-10 = 25:21, Last 5K = 15:55. That was exactly what I hoped I could do, and its a confidence booster.

I'm feeling like I'm making progress and improving. This run felt very "aerobic" which is a good sign. My workouts have been pretty easy lately, but getting in five straight weeks of good volume, even at mostly easy paces, does wonders for endurance and durability. I never really quite felt like I was racing a half-marathon. My turnover at sub 5 pace feels a little sloppy, but I'll get that back.

My short-term goal is to try and break 1:07 at Duluth in 2 weeks. Its going to take something of a monumental effort to beat my time from today (the UV course is a lot faster) but with a taper, a couple more decent workouts, and going into it with the right "racing" mentality from the gun, I think its possible and I'm going to give it my best shot.

Enjoyed the day... lots of good friends ran well. Weather was ideal. Race organization was top notch.

Also wore my Type A5 flats for the first time. They were superb.

AM - 20 miles (2 up, 13 race, 5 down)

Very nice time for the start of the season Jake. 5:08 is very respectable for where you are at right now. Great primer for Duluth! Game on...

From crockett on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 11:55:25 from 97.117.5.126

Way to go, wow. I thought about you guys at 5:30 a.m. when I was on top of a mountain about five miles southwest.

From Dave Taylor on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 14:11:23 from 174.23.73.231

Dude you were looking SOLID at mile 7. Like you were barely feeling it. Too bad the race wasn't 14 you would have taken home the W.

From Carina on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 14:44:41 from 70.208.1.0

Wow jake, your control and pacing are incredible!! Way to go!

From Jake K on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 14:51:48 from 67.177.11.154

Better to have 5 mile target splits when running without a garmin... Much easier to hit them :-)

From Derek D on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 15:33:55 from 68.109.132.154

Nice run today Jake. It really seems like things are coming around for you now. I think your Duluth goal sounds about right and I think you'll do it. An "aerobic" 1:07 is something not many of us runners will ever experience. Keep up the good work.

From Cam on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 15:38:06 from 67.222.234.132

No caffine? I'm sure you thought about that once or twice in the morning. : )

Awesome race Jake!

From allie on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 15:40:13 from 97.126.222.242

great race, jake. way to run according to plan.

you probably could have dominated that woman in the pre-race strides if you had the caffeine in you.

From Jake K on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 15:49:22 from 67.177.11.154

Impossible. I clocked her at 9.8 m/s2

From Fritz on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 16:11:21 from 67.177.4.64

Great race Jake. Looks like you paced it perfectly. Like you said, the right taper and a few more good workouts should set you up well for Duluth. Just believe that sea level equates to a 1,000 ft drop course at 4,500 ft.

From bdase on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 16:14:18 from 70.196.193.66

Strong today Jake! Smooth as you were coming in, didn't look like you were pushing at all but you were sure moving!

From RileyCook on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 17:11:23 from 65.130.87.168

Nice race Jake. I agree with Dave, you looked super strong. You're in a good spot for the race in two weeks. Good to see and race against you as always.

From Matt Poulsen on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 17:28:50 from 98.202.242.213

Excellent and well-executed race, Jake. You've got a lot more in you. Way to go, and great job being conservative.

From Little Bad Legs on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 18:16:58 from 68.186.0.46

Great race Jake. Way to keep things in perspective before Duluth in two weeks. Very smart. Well done.

From Jon on Sat, Jun 08, 2013 at 20:37:16 from 107.203.52.135

Low 1:07 as a training run. Man, very impressive.

Awesome race Jake. Very well executed.

Jake, Great race. Your one tenacious competitor and this along with all of the hard work is going to cash in eventually for you. Good luck in Minnesota!

From Paul on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 08:47:11 from 70.59.13.6

Nice race. I'd wish you good luck in Duluth, but you don't really need it...you're in better shape than you'll admit.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 11:11:53 from 65.130.13.54

NICE!!!! :) :) :)

You had some serious discipline there at the end. Very impressive. :)

From scottkeate on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 15:51:56 from 71.199.4.146

Nicely done! I love how you approached this race--nice job with the progressive effort and keeping the big picture in mind.

From runningafterbabies on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 17:56:40 from 71.195.219.247

Great controlled effort jake. I'm excited to see what you'll throw down in a couple weeks.

From MattyG on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 21:18:12 from 71.234.234.191

Great race. I love my Type A5s. They're my favorite.

From Jason D on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 22:29:37 from 24.1.80.94

Yep. Ditto, ditto, ditto. See what emerges in Duluth.

Do you not usually race halfs in the A5 or this is the first time you have worn that version?

From SlowJoe on Sun, Jun 09, 2013 at 23:14:38 from 12.232.117.226

Nice Jake. I could never race without caffeine!

On another note, I think you could run a full in the A5's, have you ever thought about that? I've never had an issue - they're soooo much faster than the fastwitch for me and your stride is probably like a feather tickling the pavement next to my elephant clomping. Anyway, nice race - looks like you're on your way back.

From Jake K on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 09:03:59 from 67.177.11.154

Jason / Joe - I've had the A5s in a box for months but just hadn't broken them out yet. My A4s still had some life in them and I had been wearing those. I am considering the A5 as a marathon shoe. I actually wore the A3s for my first marathon, then switched the Fastwitch for the last couple. My feet were a little more beat up in the A3s, but it was my fastest time, so probably worth it :-)

From Christie on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 11:52:14 from 74.213.202.246

Nice race Jake! Your pacing skills are seriously incredible. I think that every time I read your posts.

My type A5's are my all time favorite shoe:)

Matt P's wife gets the photo credit for that one... she took some great action shots!

well i knew you didn't take it:)

From Kendall on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 14:49:02 from 208.187.252.10

Re: action shots on Matt's blog post (Matt Poulsen). Where are you in the first shot? (Josh in foreground with Jon chasing...I can see Riley back there but no Jake).

From RileyCook on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 14:55:52 from 132.3.57.79

@ Kendall: That was when Jake was in a car getting dropped off just behind Jon! ;-)

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 14:57:56 from 141.221.191.225

Great race Jake. Go have a better one in Minnesota.

From Jake K on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 15:03:01 from 67.177.11.154

See the guy riding the bike in the blue shirt? I'm riding on his pegs. Or apparently running in the gutter.

From Kendall on Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 15:41:21 from 208.187.252.10

I'm not so sure that isn't you RIDING THE BIKE! Just sayin'...crossing 500 North, no sign of Jake. 2 blocks later (and a quick change) mysteriously appearing right on Jon's heels. :)

From Rachelle on Tue, Jun 11, 2013 at 10:44:45 from 159.212.71.17

Wow Jake you executed your plan perfectly. Congratulations on the race and I definitely think you are at a better place than you realize going into Duluth.

From josse on Thu, Jun 13, 2013 at 21:17:15 from 70.208.4.171

I am always amazed at your "sticking to the plan". Great job and it was fun to see you finish and yell at you.
