I know I said "no more half-marathons until TOU 1/2", but I'm making an exception for this... it was an ALL-AMERICAN FUN RUN for crying out loud! Fritz told us about this race a couple weeks ago... it's something of a tradition for his family, and apparently the race has grown from about 20 people to probably close to 400 this year (between the Kids' 1K, 5K, 10K, and HM).

It was an awesome, low-key, fun community event. You could almost call this a trail race. The course was a rolling jeep road/trail at ~6500+ feet with plenty of hills. I was thinking that Fritz and I would run ~1:20 and easily take the top two spots... but there were some other very good runners there and it turned into quite a battle. Elijah Armstrong (a high-schooler who ran 14:28 for 5000m on the track a few weeks ago) stuck right on me until the very end, along with Jacob Howell (who only fell back a tiny bit over the last two miles). I had no idea who Elijah was at the time, but I suspected he was very fast because we were moving a really good clip for that altitude/terrain, and he was strong all the way. It came down to a kick, and I should have known better to wait until the last 75 meters because he got a jump on me and I wasn't able to match it... he won by a full second. There was a little incident with a stroller at the end but even if that didn't happen I think Elijah had it all the way. He really impressed me... the kid is the real deal.

I was pleased with the effort. It was a great aerobic tempo run type workout, and I came away with a nice chunk of gold coins.

Mostly it was just a really fun day with Andrea, Amiee, Fritz, and his family. Fritz's nephew ran the Kid's 1K and the girls all ran the 5K. We had a great time, so thanks Fritz for letting me know about this race and inviting us up to Montana for the weekend.

Course Profile (yes, I actually wore a Garmin just to get this!)

That sounds awesome! Congratulations.

Congrats on the racing this week. I saw the two red entries and honestly scrolled down looking for a third. $100 in gold coins.. That's creative.

Impressive 1/2 marathon at altitude, 2 days after a 5k!

Don't feel too bad about the lose. You got beat by Elijah Armstrong. He is the Josh Rohatinsky or Conner Mantz of Idaho. He is most likely going to be a 4 time state champion in cross country. He won 4A XC as a freshman and sophmore. He just won the 1600, 3200, and 2nd in the 800. He won the 1600 as a freshman and 2nd in the 3200. That is quite the resume for a 16 year old.

That kid is legit. Not surprising to see his times.

Schreiber - if they allowed Sunday races around here, I'd double up all the time! :-)

I put up a more detailed report with some photos...

....looks like he ran a 14:28 5K on the track a few weeks ago, which doesn't surprise me because guys that young can't run like that in an altitude HM unless they are THAT good. I was shocked (at the time) that he was holding the pace so well.

Can I just chime in really quick and say that I beat him in the 3200 at Arcadia...

From Tomy on Sun, Jul 07, 2013 at 21:32:16 from 98.202.82.127

Haha no but seriously, he is insane.

Looks like a ton of fun and that's quite a workout for you!

From Jake K on Sun, Jul 07, 2013 at 21:36:37 from 67.177.11.154

Tomy - I wouldn't want it to come down to kick against YOU either. I'd have no chance! :-)

From Tomy on Sun, Jul 07, 2013 at 21:38:40 from 98.202.82.127

Don't worry, it wouldn't ever. You'd be WAY too far ahead!

From Tomy on Sun, Jul 07, 2013 at 21:42:37 from 98.202.82.127

Oh and I've been meaning to ask you, do you still have a group that runs every Sunday/whenever? It'd be super if I could run with you guys!

From Jake K on Sun, Jul 07, 2013 at 21:43:34 from 67.177.11.154

Funny I just sent you a message along the same lines... yes, and I'll be in touch. You should come up to Jeremy Ranch w/ us sometimes. That would be great.

From Tomy on Sun, Jul 07, 2013 at 21:46:01 from 98.202.82.127

Awesome! Just let me know when you guys do go!

Amiee made that GIF. I want FRB to become all GIFs, all the time now. Starting w/ Tour de Run this weekend.

From allie on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 12:20:58 from 208.54.39.193

yes, i want to see a GIF of the battle to the kneaders basket.

From Superfly on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 13:16:54 from 74.211.21.81

Nice job on a dirt track at elevation... and good job to the HS kid who stuck it out and battled for the entire half. You don't see that out of many HS kids.

From jtshad on Mon, Jul 08, 2013 at 13:48:33 from 141.221.191.225

Great race! Congrats on a good time at altitude. Yes, Elijah is for real!

I almost drove up to this race at the last minute but decided not to on Saturday morning...good thing with all you fast guys up there!

Hope you had fun in Island Park...yes Fritz is a local legend at that race.

From Rachelle on Tue, Jul 09, 2013 at 11:45:53 from 159.212.71.17

Wow that course + altitude looks kind of legit. Awesome race Jake and I am glad to you got an opportunity to wear the flag shorts.

Spend those gold coins you earned wisely!
