Always one of the more competitive 5Ks in Utah, Draper Days did not disappoint this morning. The start was madness (funnel the crowd after 15 meters, see below) and it was a minor miracle that no one took a fall. Good thing we weren't wearing spikes or it might have gotten bloody.

I tried to stay up on Teren's shoulder during the first mile, but in reality we were running as a fluid pack of at least 5 - Teren, Josh, Riley, Tomy, and myself (not sure if anyone else was close early on. Hit the mile in 4:47, right about where I expected. I tried to string it out a little bit and take the lead in the second mile, but my mini-surge only lasted for a short time before the guys were right back on me. Josh and Teren started to pull away just a little as we hit the two mile mark (4:45, and 9:32 at 2 miles). Riley was a few strides ahead, and it sort of stayed that way all the way to the finish. Last mile was 5:02, and ~35 for the last tenth. I finished 4th place in 15:09.  Josh won, followed by Teren (both under 15) and Riley was a few seconds ahead of me. Scott and Kramer finished 5th and 6th. Good running by a lot of the people on the blog.

This was one of my better 5Ks in a while. I'm never going to be remotely satisfied when I finish off the podium, but I'm moving in the right direction, and its not like I lost to a bunch of scrubs! :-) Two years ago I ran 15:04 here, but the course was short that year, so this was a much better performance. Today's race exactly ties my "altitude 5K PR", which I ran on the track in 2011 a week before running my half-marathon PR. So that's good. I ran a little more mileage than I probably needed to this week, so a couple more really light days should leave me even fresher for the Des News 10K on Wednesday, which is going to be absolutely stacked. I'm excited.

Ran a nice cooldown with a bunch of the guys afterwards. Always fun to get to do that. And Andrea ran today, continuing her comeback, which makes me very happy.

I like this course. A perfect loop, with a slight (yet challenging) incline from ~2-2.7.

AM - 11 miles.
PM - 4 miles w/ Andrea (bike).

I like this course, too. Honest without being killer. I'm glad that you and Teren did not get killed by a truck today. See you at the Des News start! (Or probably on the bus.)

Great race Jake!

I'm very glad that Teren survived that truck brushby. You will not see me on the bus though because I'm running the 10K. Taking a break from bus rides this summer :-)

Pretty nice time for a loop course, congrats. The old Draper Days course used to be a decent net downhill, and people rarely ran as fast as you guys did today.

draper days is definitely one of my favorite 5k courses. you can really get moving over that down grade in the second mile...and the hill at the end keeps things interesting!

nice job on part one of the draper des double.

From Jake K on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 11:24:34 from 67.177.11.154

Paul - yesterday I was looking for this route on the course tool and found your map from a few years ago - I was like "wait, definitely not the same course!"

I'll take a flat(ish) loop anyday.

That old one wasn't a screamer, though. Seems like it was probably only 15-20 seconds faster, just a little net downhill. Probably made it close to what sea level / oxygen would give you.

Great race Jake. It sounds like it was a great battle at the front. Hitting your PR has to feel good.

That start is insane!! Way to go Jake, that must be nice to realize you are at your at or near your prime as far as the 5k is concerned. Good luck on Wednesday!

Great job Jake. Always good to see you run a great time and the hamstring hold up as well. Congrats.

I love the funnel start - I think it should go down to single track after 30m though.

Sounds like a pretty good race for you, you're definitely on your way back to your A-game.

From Jason D on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 18:13:43 from 24.1.80.94

Great race, Jake. Not much width to that finishing chute, though. I assume that, along with the start, is not accidental.

From Derek D on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 18:25:02 from 68.109.132.154

Nice racing Jake. I'm glad to hear you went for it in the second mile. Quite the group of runners you were competing against. Looks like everything is going well. You've had a ton of great training the last couple weeks with all the hills/races. Good job!

From Matt Poulsen on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 19:26:53 from 98.202.242.213

Nice race, Jake! Your speed is coming along nicely! Great pictures. That funnel start does not look fun.

Great race and great report! It was fun to see you again--felt like it's been ages. Thanks for posting the course profile--makes me feel a bit better about my time today. I get pumped to race whenever you're around. Keep up the good work and let's watch you set some new PR's this fall.

From RileyCook on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 20:46:52 from 174.52.234.49

Nice work Jake. That was pretty fun this morning running the race with a great competitive field. I liked the honest course and honest pace of the race.

I think you're primed for a great 10k at Des News.

From Josh E on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 21:04:25 from 75.169.31.22

I am glad it went so well. Much faster than Murray. Hopefully this is the start of a solid string of races for you.
