AM - 26 miles. TOU Marathon - 2:28:14, 3rd place. Average pace = 5:39 per mile. Splits at the bottom of the report. Came through the first half in 1:14:24 and then ran the second half in 1:13:50. A controlled, even effort... stuck right to my plan.

Tylor Thatcher and Jason Holt took off at a quick pace, which ended up being a very good thing because it forced me to decide right away whether I was going to follow my plan or give chase. I ran most of the first 14 miles with Nate Hornock and Jon Heslop. Once we hit Hollow Road I pulled away a bit and ran the rest of the way solo. Overall it was a good effort and just what I needed today - a high quality long run that would continue to build fitness and not take anything out of the bank.

TOU always puts on the best races. I'm happy to add another moose trophy to the collection.

Andrea and Amiee were out on the second half of the course providing encouragement and giving me someone to briefly talk to every couple miles. All of these photos are from Amiee...

Pack running

Smooth bottle handoff from Andrea.

I took 5 gels today - PR! (I'm liking the liquid consistency of the Powerbar gels)

I also took a 20 minute ice bath afterwards - PR!

Floppy hair adds a new element to my running

Splits: 5:34, 5:42, 5:38, 5:36, 5:41, 5:46, 5:48, 5:39, 5:41, 5:42, 5:42, 5:38,
5:40, 5:36, 5:35, 5:32, 5:51, 5:48, 5:34, 5:48, 5:47, 5:28, 5:42, 5:38
and then 0:56 for the last two-tenths (which was definitely short because I
was doing no more than jogging it in at that point).

Getting the job done and the travel fare earned. Nice work Jake.

Nicely executed Jake!

I had this in the schedule pretty much all along... wasn't sure what effort I'd put out until after the 16 mile tempo last weekend. That made me think that ~2:27 would be the point at which it would start taking something away from Chicago. Luckily that was enough for a nice little payday. Plus I couldn't pass up TOU... just a great race and I love running up there.

Great controlled race....and great photos.

I really look forward to following your race in Chicago.

Great job Jake. I am still baffled that you can do this on the back end of a 140 mile week. Looking forward to a great performance at Chicago.

You can never really have enough moose trophies! Nice work, Jake. Chicago is going to be great.

Good job Jake, I like those gels for the same reason. They seem less sweet too.

Nice run and congrats on the gel PR! Powerbar gels are definitely the best.

I really like your buildup this time around. Everything makes sense within your own personal framework and you are executing with gusto.

That would've been a great first half pack for me. I felt very disappointed not to be there while lying on my couch considering it Saturday morning.

From Jake K on Mon, Sep 22, 2014 at 14:10:13 from 199.190.170.22

I thought of you Josh, because they announced your name in 4th place as Jon was finishing. It would have been perfect - I could have paced you to a PR and then of course left you in the dust over the last quarter mile :-)

From Josh E on Mon, Sep 22, 2014 at 14:19:35 from 205.235.104.4

Coud've been sweet. Jon got my bib. They corrected it most places but I guess the old name stuck somewhere.

From Jason D on Mon, Sep 22, 2014 at 20:59:53 from 68.80.27.222

I thought for sure it was a mistake when I saw your name in the race results. I think I said something like "cheeky little bar stool pulled a Paul and jumped into to a marathon!" 2:28 is fast but when you look at the pace with your ability it's really a top-end moderate effort for you. Makes sense it context. Well done. Getting close now!
