I had a free entry to the Great Pumpkin Run to Benefit the Utah Council for Exceptional Children joins the Derek Zoolander School for Kids Who Can't Read Good and Want to Do Other Stuff Good Too 2.97 mile XC race at Wheeler Farm. I decided to go since the race started at 9am (so I could get my 10 hours of sleep) and if I ran from home, I would have just jogged 9 minute miles this morning instead. My goal was to run an average pace faster than the TOU Marathon, which seemed like it might be quite a challenge.

I warmed up a bit w/ Andrea and didn't really feel like running hard. I thought I would just cruise and win easy but then I saw Nate Hornock and realized he would probably kick my butt (which is what happened). I was also shocked that Allie and James weren't there. Aren't Saturdays for 5Ks?

The course is 2 laps around the farm on the dirt path. Our first mile was 5:16, and it felt harder than the opening mile of the marathon a couple weeks ago, despite being the exact same pace. Then Nate surged and opened up a big gap on me! Second mile was 4:58 and he put about 10 seconds on me. I was content to go back to cruising along at that point... my body does not want to run sub 5 pace yet. Plus we had to dodge lots of strollers - who takes a stroller on a XC-style course?!?! The last "mile" was 4:54 but I'm 100% sure it was short. Definitely not a 5K!

Fun to shock the system a bit as I get myself back into the style of training that shocks the system all the time. All things considered, this is actually a good indicator that I'm bouncing back pretty well. Nate ran really strong today (14:59)... congrats to him.

I'm also glad I did this race instead of a tempo run on the roads - the softer surface is still better for my legs right now. Also, I won a $25 gift card to Buca de Beppo. Score!

PM - 5.2 miles w/ Kevin and Roller-Andrea. Stopped and chatted w/ Fritz's sister and we all agreed that he is a marathon slayer. Great running by so many of the bloggers at StG today! Looking forward to reading some recaps of how it went down.

We took an afternoon hike up to Mt Aire today. Its a short but steep one (climbs about 2K feet over ~1.8 miles). Perfect weather up in the mountains and the fall colors are popping in certain spots...

Captions for the 4 pictures -

1) I've only been running for 1 minute?!

2) I can't believe I'm losing a freakin' Pumpkin 5k.

3) Might as well enjoy the scenery - duck, geese, horses, etc.

4) If I give Andrea a thumbs-up, maybe she won't think I'm not trying too hard and putting myself in a hole for the racing 3 weeks after the marathon.

Nice race, Jake, but I have to say that Andrea's comments are the real winner. I loved the second comment:)

Holy Smokes, Jake! Two sub-5 miles? I was tempted to go to this race, but opted for a family bike ride and cinnamon roll run instead. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

It just amazes me the variety of ability at 5K races around here. You nearly break 15 and are still second. Not sure how the competition gets piled up in one event like that. Glad to hear you had fun and got paid for your workout.

nice race. i like pic #3 with the chicken coop.

james says i look like princess leia in the group shot. at least i wasn't wearing a red TOU shirt.

From SlowJoe on Sat, Oct 06, 2012 at 19:03:26 from 69.131.141.92

Looks like you beat that MP goal, nice! Glad you didn't trip over those ducks.

Hey yeah, allie does kinda look like princess Leia in that one.

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 06, 2012 at 19:49:00 from 67.177.11.154

haha Andrea's captions are pretty much spot-on what was going through my head... we've been hanging out w/ each other too much.

Melody - I'm certain that last mile would have been a 5+ if it was actually a full mile :-)

Just glad I didn't take out any wildlife!

From Bonnie on Sat, Oct 06, 2012 at 19:52:28 from 174.26.192.195

Jake - it looks like so much fun! I love the kit ... seriously, how cool can one skinny guy be?

From runningafterbabies on Sat, Oct 06, 2012 at 20:02:41 from 71.195.219.247

I've been meaning to tell you that I picked up a new pair of flats the other day and they totally reminded me of you.

I can't believe you lost a race!

Love the aspen pics at the end. Beautiful.

I really like your festive orange singlet :) Awesome race, and 3 weeks after a marathon, amazing!!!

From Jake K on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 08:28:58 from 67.177.11.154

Melody - those shoes are hardly even orange compared to the flats I wore for the marathon :-) I am amazed at how light some of those Mizuno flats are, though.

Jon - by my count, I've lost a lot more races than I've won this year :-)

From AngieB on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 08:42:36 from 65.130.72.90

Love the pic of the duck and chicken chasing you haha. Andrea's becoming quite the photographer.

From AngieB on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 08:46:00 from 65.130.72.90

Oh wait their both ducks.

From Rachelle on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 13:12:27 from 76.8.202.193

Yes!! You succeeded in doing a Rachelle pose in the middle of a run. So incredibly proud. :) Nice work out there.

Looks like a fun afternoon hike as well. You and Andrea need to clean out that shoe room of yours because I think I'm moving in....

From Fritz on Sun, Oct 07, 2012 at 16:18:31 from 71.219.155.113

That's a great time on that course. It kicked my trash last week. I could have sworn I saw Nate at the start yesterday but I guess I am glad he was racing you instead of me :)

From Jake K on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 11:13:16 from 155.100.226.191

I figured if that pose works for you, Rachelle, I might as well give it a shot :-)

Fritz I'm fairly certain we ran a slightly shorter course than you did last weekend. Although not surprisingly, you ran the marathon at a faster average pace than your tuneup 5K again. You defy the laws of physiology! :-)

From Little Bad Legs on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 14:20:03 from 107.62.27.212

Impressive race as always Jake. Well done.

From Superfly on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 14:29:17 from 74.211.21.81

Great race! I love all the pictures every time. I'm not techy enough to pull something like that off.

From Jake K on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 14:34:55 from 155.100.226.191

I'm really hoping to have no more race pictures next year - because that will mean Andrea is running again... and not my personal photographer :-) So enjoy it while you can!

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 16:11:51 from 67.172.235.55

Thanks for the captions Andrea. Otherwise, it made no sense! I am glad those ducks did not give chase, they can be MEAN!

From joebell1981 on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 13:11:30 from 108.59.48.1

Haha - yes - Andrea - very funny captions :) When are you guys gonna make a trip to the midwest and smoke everybody on the flat low elevation races?!? :)

From Jake K on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 16:38:39 from 155.100.226.191

Joe - if you had promised me in May that Chicago would be overcast and 40 degrees, I would have been there in a heartbeat. I'm fairly certain that once the next OTQ cycle opens up, Chicago is going to be one of the first stops on our tour :-)

From Fritz on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 16:49:39 from 65.116.116.6

Speaking of Chicago, looks like our neighbor Mr. Smyth had a major blowup. Went out in 1:05:30 and finished in 2:21. He is probably regretting not running with us at Jeremy Ranch. :)
