The last chance addition to the circuit brought out pretty much everyone trying to place in the money! As I said yesterday, I was trying to bump up my total # of races and maybe move up a few spots while getting in a decent workout. Running a Half/5K double a month after the marathon isn't exactly advisable, but it ended up being a pretty fun morning. Allie and Devra were doing the same thing as me, so we all shared the misery of finishing a half marathon and then having to run a 5K 30 minutes later :-)

Besides the circuit points, my goals for today were to - 1) Beat Andrea's PRs, and 2) Not get hurt. Mission Accomplished!

Half-Marathon: 1:15:50 (2nd place) - We started in pitch darkness. Brett H was there so I knew at some point he would pull away and I would be running by myself, but the first 2 miles were nice and casual as we chatted and laughed about how the flashing motorcycle lights were going to give us a seizure. Then the stupid motorcycles led us off course (onto the marathon route)... luckily we realized the mistake after about 30 seconds and turned around. We then had to catch everyone who had gone the correct way, but that only took another mile or so. Brett was long gone after 3 miles and I was just trying to get in a nice steady run. First 5 miles (actually like 5.2 b/c of the detour) was 31:46 (~6:20 pace), and then the last 8.1 miles was 44:04 (5:26 pace). Then we had about a half-hour to get nice and tight before the 5K...

5K: 16:57 (2nd place) - I was not responsible for plowing over any of the little kids who lined up in front of us. Ken R opened up about a 20 second gap in the first half-mile, and that was it for me. Splits were 5:58, 5:21, 5:04, :35. I'm glad I got second in both races because I'm not sure how I could have entered "1.5th" place into the race report form.

Overall a good workout and a fun morning with friends. Devra won like 6 medals... I also won that many but only came home with two. Somehow Kevin (despite not being in any of the races) ended up with 2-3 medals as well. We'll probably melt them all down and make a sword. And major kudos to Andrea for beating her 5K goal time by 4 minutes

Oh, and the courses were super easy...

So there you have it - the Fittest State Festival was a smashing success. Rumor has it that we passed Alabama to move into the Top 5 fittest states, but official results won't be up for a few more days. And I'm definitely not ready (mentally) to run fast / race hard yet. Its gonna take another week or two for me to get that edge back and feel totally recovered from the marathon.

Some other nuggets...

-Favorite part of the morning was the group cooldown run back to Allie and James' house. Its been a while since we've had a big crew running together.

-Least favorite part of the morning was nearly getting taken out by cyclists riding the bike tour on almost every single turn of the course!

Nice job on the double race! Sounds like you did it the smart way and got the points you could without killing yourself (although getting a seizure would've sucked). Congrats!

Way to do the double, Jake.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 13:40:03 from 174.253.176.163

Seriously Jake ... what is your superhero name? We all know! Come clean!! :)

Congrats!

UTAH! this is the [fittest] plaaaace.

From NatalieK on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 15:59:26 from 24.2.101.184

Congrats! You're crazy in the best/fastest way possible. Was it raining on you guys this morning?

From RAD on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:27:08 from 98.202.23.178

You should've plowed those little brats over!! What mother doesn't teach their kids to stay at the back of the race?!? Natural consequences...natural consequences! :) I wanted to yank those little stinkers back and tether them to the side gate until the crowd thinned out, but I got there with 2 seconds to spare and had to just do damage control. Ugghh.

Anyway, despite all that you had a couple of awesome races this morning! A double double, Lovin' it! What a fun race and amazing festival, I've never seen its equal here in the fittest state around. A race sword...hmmm, now that may just be the best idea yet!

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:32:22 from 67.177.11.154

haha Rachel I hope your kids are OK! I heard afterwards about how they went down! There were a couple other ones right in front of Ken and I, and he wisely told them to get out of the way.

Natalie - It didn't rain... otherwise I don't think I would have gotten out of bed.

Allie - I've written some new verses to the Fittest State song over the last couple hours... we only have 364 days to start working on the music video!

From Jason D on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:44:25 from 24.1.80.94

Nice double, tisk, tisk! on breaking the 100-mile barrier, even though technically this represents roughly 33% reduction from peak marathon mileage, which is a bit hard to wrap the head around!

From RAD on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:45:53 from 98.202.23.178

My little ones luckily didn't get plowed over, but the bad mom in me wishes they would've - natural consequences! So, yes they are fine. Despite the tongue lashing their mother gave them on the way home from the race....long drives are good for that!

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:46:40 from 67.177.11.154

I count Monday to Sunday, so as long as I don't run more than 15 miles between now and tomorrow night, I'll achieve my sub-100 goal :-)

From Burt on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:52:35 from 174.235.195.122

How incredibly embarrassing. You just ran a half marathon AND a 5k faster than I can run a half marathon. The only thing I have to say is IN YOUR FACE ALABAMA!

From allie on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 16:58:32 from 97.117.85.43

burt: you just made a comment edit.

I like the melting the medals down to make a sword idea :-) Nice effort this morning!

From Redd on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 18:11:13 from 67.182.221.190

Some of us are just that good. And I needed more for my Lance costume.

From RileyCook on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 18:47:48 from 65.130.83.218

Nice job Jake. That's a tough double on two tough courses. What a crazy day huh?

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 19:00:14 from 67.177.11.154

I'm not even running again this afternoon. So yeah, definitely a crazy day when that happens! :-)

From Steve on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 20:11:59 from 66.87.65.231

I wish i would have thought about that Double thing. Didn't even occur to me. Sneaky

From MichelleL on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 20:26:53 from 144.214.220.136

Well done, nice workout and great way to move up. And wow, only a half hour in between, I would have just rather keep going, do you agree? I do like how your first 5k split was slower than mine in my 5k (we won't count that yours was uphill, mine was down and you had just finished a half). I beat you fair and square :D

From Scott Ensign on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 22:49:28 from 67.40.114.105

nice races. you are really piling them up. I wonder if you will set a new record for yearly blog mileage? as well as quantcast numbers. well done

From Kendall on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 22:53:48 from 67.40.113.86

Congrats on your 25K! We're behind Alabama!?

From Bam on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 14:11:21 from 89.204.202.96

Nice workout Jake. Must've been tough going from half marathon pace to 5k(ish) pace. It's all in the bank.

From ACorn on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 14:18:45 from 24.2.76.146

Great training run! Looks like a challenging course.

From Jake K on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 19:53:59 from 67.177.11.154

Michelle - I honestly believe it actually would have been easier to just keep going. I suppose if I ran ~1:45, I could have done that... :-)

Scott - I probably could surpass my mileage total from last year, but I'm really, really going to try NOT to.

Kendall - I actually have no idea how the states are ranked... but I'm guessing Colorado is #1 b/c otherwise people in Boulder would throw a giant hissy-fit :-)

Bam - It was more like 50K pace down to Marathon pace! :-)

From Kassi on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 21:01:57 from 98.202.223.143

This is truly impressive!! That sounds so painful to have to run a 5k after a half marathon! Nice work!!

From Michael Finch on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 21:30:55 from 75.169.212.61

haha thats is so cool. Nice double! But i think Riley Cook has you beat running 2 marathons in two weeks ;) Does he get more points for doing that?

From Adam RW on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 22:11:53 from 67.182.250.241

Thanks for the AL jab :)

It was good seeing you all.

I just kept telling myself the whole 5K this is the closest I am ever going to get to you in a race and to throw it down. But I guess you need to have a full in your legs for me to beat you in 5K 30 minutes later...

From AngieB on Sun, Oct 14, 2012 at 22:17:30 from 65.130.92.207

Nice work! How ya feeling post TOU marathon? Fully recovered?

From Jake K on Mon, Oct 15, 2012 at 08:59:06 from 155.100.226.191

Mike - I'm gonna try, but I don't know what my work schedule is like for Wednesday. Oh and 2 marathons a YEAR is plenty :-)

Angie - Not sure if I'm fully recovered yet. I guess I am, but I haven't really "tested" myself yet. Now I'm kind of getting to the point where I need to find out... this upcoming week needs to be a springboard into about 3 pretty hard weeks of running if I'm going to have a shot at a good 1/2 the rest of this year. I'm confident but at the same time, also willing to shut it down if things aren't going as I want them to.

From Rachelle on Mon, Oct 15, 2012 at 09:28:00 from 159.212.71.25

It sounds like an epic festival of events! Great job at both races Jake. I think you were wise and gave it the perfect effort without doing anything stupid. :)

From Fritz on Mon, Oct 15, 2012 at 18:00:18 from 65.116.116.6

Nice job! Sounds like a fun race and course. I guess we have to give the director some credit for helping to offset the 20 or so downhill dashes.

From Hamdog Alum on Wed, Oct 17, 2012 at 17:43:40 from 71.87.124.223

Nice racing! Good job finding the right efforts to place so well in that crazy double.
