Cow Chip XC - 16:19 - 1st place

The next town over from my aunt's house has been doing this low-key cross country race on Thanksgivng weekend for 20 years. I stumbled across it on the internet a few weeks ago and decided that I had to check it out since we didn't have to head back to JFK until the afternoon.

The course was typical high school xc - loops around fields, trail through the woods for a while, and even had a stone wall jump. There wasn't any competition (except for a guy on a mountain bike who couldn't really keep up) and I had a good time running. Taking three straight nights of partying into account and the fact that I wore my biggest/cushiest shoes, this may have been my greatest "adjusted" performance of all-time :-) And I finally notched a win in Connecticut!

Great racing Jake. I sometimes think ALL racing should either be track racing or cross country racing. Except for marathons. In other words, how running was 50 years ago.

XC and track can be great - for all ages. I've definitely had fun running some (3!) cross country races this year. In theory I should love mountain/trail racing, being that I love running and love the mountains, but for whatever reason I just don't want to bring competition into my recreation world (and totally suck at technical stuff) so XC has sort of become a middle ground for me again. The problem is that the races are few and far between!

Those are awesome pics. What do you mean the mountain bike couldn't keep up--how slow does one have to ride?

I know I couldn't run a 16:19 5K but I'm sure I could Mt. Bike one!

One of the fields we went around had pretty thick grass, and there were a couple of short steep(ish) uphill sections... on those parts I was faster. But if he was riding quicker on the easier parts instead of staying near me, he obviously would have killed me.
