AM - 6 miles.

PM - 5 miles.

Meteorological winter starts today - a good time to evaluate something I wrote four months ago: "I want to approach this fall with the goal of being in excellent condition for the 2016 ski season."

I've only been out skiing a few times so far, but I'd say I nailed it. My body feels great - strong, responsive, athletic. I'm healthy and feel energetic while running and doing pretty much anything else. I don't feel like I have any movement restrictions (compared to a year ago, that is a BIG deal!). Getting in some 5K races over the past two months and being able to run faster again without worrying about injuries has been a really nice bonus. Even if the events are low-key, I still love putting on my racing flats and competing.

I bet that if I buckled down and started more focused "training" I could get myself into 2011-2014 racing shape in 2-3 months. Not going to happen, though. Physically I might be there, but emotionally I'm not feeling it yet. I simply don't want to create that kind of emphasis on racing over the winter months. I've done that in the past, and don't feel like I need to put in that kind of effort again right now. I'm having too much fun with the current approach to life... and I want to ski even more than last year, so nothing goes on the calendar that would detract from that. Andrea and I both feel the same way - we are happy to be able to run faster again, but in no hurry to push it any harder. "Have fun doing whatever you want to do and see what happens" seems like a good plan.

So I guess my "running goal" moving forward is to find a way to maintain my current running fitness over the winter. I'm sure my overall endurance will improve as the backcountry ski days build up, and throwing in some unstructured faster running from time to time will keep my legs snappy (good for my general health too). Honestly if I can run a halfway decent 5K/10K at any given time, that's plenty good for now and makes me happy.

Deep down I know I have another fast marathon in me, but it feels more like a fall pursuit at the moment... after 8 months of skiing, wedding, climbing a bunch of mountains in Europe, etc... Priorities :-)

AM - 7 miles.

PM - Skinned 2 x GW at Brighton [3500'].

On Sunday I saw a bunch of elk near Elk Park Ridge ski run (go figure!). But where there are elk, there is probably a mountain lion. That dawned on me tonight when it got really dark out.

Looped this video a few times. So cool. Now Andrea wants a glow in the dark ski suit. We'll probably have to stick with headlamps.

AM - Alpe de Vert at Sundance Resort: Skinned 8 x Arrowhead [10,300'].

First six laps w/ Andrea, then two solo, then rendezvoused w/ Andrea and Amiee at Owl Bar. Great fun, ideal weather... perfect day. Felt like I could have done a few more but 10K was plenty good!

Splits...

Way more relaxed effort than last year, but still faster. I did make sure Jason D wouldn't be able to give me a hard time about positive-splitting :-)

AM1 - 3 miles w/ Andrea before Uber took her to China.

AM2 (into PM) - Skinned a combo of long and medium GW laps at Brighton. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do another full 10K today, but Amiee showed up after I finished 4 uphill laps and having her company the rest of the way made it a breeze* [10,200].

I was pleased with the symmetry of the elevation profile...

* "breeze" being a very relative term... going for a 30 mile run might have been easier.

AM - 10 miles.

PM - Skinned 6 x Milly at Brighton [6600']. Changed it up from the usual GW laps. Casual pace, just listening to podcasts and enjoying the scenery all afternoon. Shorter laps felt good after a longer effort yesterday.

For a few minutes I entertained the idea of a 2 x 10K weekend, but decided I wanted to drive down the canyon before dark. I've skied 8 of the past 15 days with 46K of climbing during that span... a pretty good start to the season considering the lack of snow (but that should change very soon!!!).

The big storm perfectly coincided with a really busy stretch at work so I wasn't able to get out and take advantage, but I've really been enjoying the wintery running and especially enjoying not spending one second in a car the past three days. Run-commuting pays big dividends on weeks like these.

Very happy to be back on skis after 3 days with no glisse! Saw a big herd of deer/elk type creatures just before it got dark, but it was way too cold to take photos tonight. I had to move uphill at a pretty good clip to keep my fingers from going numb.

PM - Skinned 3 x GW at Brighton [5200'].

I gave a ride down the canyon to a couple high school kids who couldn't figure out the bus schedule. Turns out they both ran cross-country and they told me how their coach had them running 6 miles every day, which is crazy because it is "about the same amount that most olympians run."

PM - Skinned 3 x GW at Brighton [5200']. Again. Waited until the lifts stopped and then cranked out another evening 5K. The first climb was surprisingly a huge PR (30:31) and then I slowed to "podcast pace" for the next two. Now I guess I have to try and break 30 at some point!

AM - 10 miles in the snow!

PM - Ski Tour in Silver Fork w/ Amiee [2850']. We skied two laps in the Meadow Chutes. The snow in the upper meadows was excellent and it felt so good to make powder turns again. On the flip side, I made a few navigation errors which led to a somewhat horrendous bushwack exit. I get one free pass for poor route-finding every season and used it today. Unfortunately for Amiee, she got to experience the survival skiing instead of Andrea for once. All that being said... it was still a real backcountry ski tour with powder snow and not just skinning laps at Brighton! El Nino has arrived!

PM - Storm skinning at Brighton [3100']. Going up there tonight had bad idea written all over it, but it ended up being a blast and the drive down BCC wasn't too sketchy, thanks to the old reliable jeep! The storm was raging above 10,000 feet, with wind gusts that actually knocked me over near the top of the first ascent. So I ended up progressively moving down the mountain and did fun mini-golf style laps in the pow.

AM - 7 miles.

Came across some of my old marble composition books recently.

This was probably my first training log entry ever...

Another one from high school - what is more impressive: sub 27 for 200m or my Mom running a sub 7:00 mile?

These ski logs bring back good memories. A few pages from 2010...

I kept fairly good records of skiing (and peakbagging) during my two years in Colorado (but have no running logs from those years). We kept a really good skiing log during our first season in Utah, then started tracking running a lot more closely (its nice to now have 5 years of consistent logs at this point) and stopped keeping track of the skiing as much (we also barely skied for three seasons).

I'm very optimistic that 2016 is going to be an excellent year for both skiing and running.

Unseasonably warm, borderline hot, in Knoxville this week. 70+ degrees every day... if I'm not skiing, I prefer to spend my Christmas vacations shirtless.
