AM - 6 miles. JAJA run from the Peruvian Lodge up to the Albion Basin campground and back. We haven't gotten enough high-altitude uphill running lately.

PM - 9 miles w/ Andrea (bike).

Yesterday afternoon was the Peruvian Dash 8K. I ran with Abby. This was her longest run ever so if you get a chance check out her race report and give her a shout. We ran the second half of the race in a scary lightning storm. Abby sprinted ahead of me at the very end and I couldn't keep up! The rest of the evening was a ton of fun - great dinner, hours in the hot tub, lots of time spent with great friends. Spending the night at the lodge after the race and party is the best. I don't want this race to die, and I'm going to do my best to help bring it back (as a 1 mile) next fall.

I'm able to run thanks to these shoes Andrea "modified" for me yesterday...

That was so AWESOME of you to pace Abby and protect her from the whizzing cars not to mention heroic almost falling off road catches in your Tarahumara Saucony heel-less sandals!

I've heard of cutting the toes out of shoes, but jeez...

Why is the race being cancelled?

From Jake K on Sun, Sep 08, 2013 at 13:45:21 from 67.177.11.154

John Cahill is getting old, and the management team at the lodge doesn't really want to deal with the hassle of organizing the race anymore. They are more about ski season. The race market is very saturated this time of year. 14 races in Utah yesterday. Last year they only had 37 runners. I tried to push it and we got it up to 55 this year, but still far away from the 200 they used to get.

So, my idea is to re-brand the race as Utah's fastest mile. No buses, finish line right in front of the lodge. Straight to BBQ/keg/hot tub. Doesn't destroy your legs like the 8K does.

I really think it could work.

I would do it. Flying downhill mile could be really fun!

Yes!! I love it! That is totally worth it so you can run w/o the rubbing.

Great racing/running/jogging this weekend! You did it all :)

It was really nice to see you and Andrea Saturday!

Haha I LOVE the shoes! Andreas a great thinker/inventor. Seeing those totally made my day.

Putting her engineering degree to good use!

Cutting out the heel of shoes is something I've actually done quite a bit in the past, for research projects in some of the labs I've worked it. We call it "windowing" - so we could attach reflective markers to the calcaneus. Not a perfect way to measure heel motion by any means, but it was the best (cheap/easy) method available.

Obviously what we did over the weekend basically turned those old Type As into glorified Crocs! :-)

I was thinking Crocs, as soon as I saw these! Funny.
