AM - 8 miles on campus, slow and easy.

PM - 12 miles. 10 Mile Tempo Run in 52:30. Average pace = 5:15 / mile.

Andrea and I did this workout as an out & back out on the Frontage road along I-80, past the airport (where the SLCTC does the winter series). I felt really smooth and controlled on this run. Very nice confidence booster. Splits were 5:20, 5:21, 5:20, 5:18, 5:17, 5:11, 5:13, 5:13, 5:11, 5:06. I guess I got a little excited at the 180 degree turn after 5 miles, then just kept it rolling. A few more solid marathon-pace workouts like these over the next couple weeks, and I'm going to be feeling really good about my chances in Philly.

Warmed up 1 mile + strides, cooled down 1 mile just as a gorgeous sunset was kicking into high gear.

It's been great to stumble on your blog. You are kill'n it!! Awesome. I loved the Diet Dew blog post. How's that going btw??

I think I'm officially at ONE MONTH w/out any Diet Dew! I honestly don't even miss it at this point.

Planning to chug one after Philly, though! :-)

Will taste sweet I'm sure... Stay after it.. I'm cheering for you.

Nice workout Jake! Very solid.

Very tight splits. Nice to finish off with the fastest to show that you were really in control of the pace.

From Jake K on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 11:53:49 from 155.100.226.53

Thanks. I felt like I could have closed in 4:4X if I wanted to, which is a very good feeling... but I'm saving that kind of big "go to the well" effort for another month! :-)

That tempo has to give you a lot of confidence for the marathon. You are going to CRUSH IT!

From Jake K on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 12:30:40 from 155.100.226.53

If I don't stop for a philly cheesesteak at the mile 4 aid station, I expect to run fairly well

From Rachelle on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 13:19:21 from 159.212.71.17

Nice tempo run Jake. It boggles my mind a bit that you can run 10 miles in 52 minutes. That is just amazing!

From Scott Wesemann on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 13:32:17 from 205.158.160.209

Wow, nice PM workout. That is seriously fast. Philly cheesesteaks are the best! I hope you get to indulge when you're out there. Congrats on the no Dew for a month. I gave up Diet Coke for one day last week. Haha.

for that pace to feel that easy for you is fantastic! That taper week you had must have left you feeling really good this week considering you're back up in mileage again.

From Jake K on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 14:18:51 from 155.100.226.53

Erik - the taper for Long Beach really served two purposes - 1) race fast 2) it set me up to feel somewhat "fresh" going into this last cycle of training before the marathon, which I think is important. I timed things pretty well... and I also think I have a good idea now of how to time my taper for Philly. No need to re-invent the wheel on that one!

From Hamdog Alum on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 16:45:05 from 66.188.108.30

The 1/2 was perfect for your training toward Philly! It must feel really nice to feel good too!

I've been maintaining mileage because I didn't get a 1/2 race in this fall, so it's been a longer build up than I expected or really planned. I would have rather had a 1/2 marathon to break things up a bit.
