I had one goal today - cross the finish line first. So while I fell short of that (by a landslide), it wasn't due to a poor performance on my part... major tip of the cap to Riley, who ran a fantastic race (1:05:16, narrowly missing the course record). In my opinion, the most impressive race anyone in Utah (not just FRB) has run this year. 

The field was pretty stacked (normal for this race now). The primary competition was Riley, Bryant, and Jon Coyle. I told myself I wasn't going to take the lead in the canyon, but the pace was slow in the first quarter mile and I felt uncomfortable running so close to everyone, so I took off - just over a minute into the race and put a small gap on everyone. It wasn't exactly a break for the tape, just an effort to string it out a little, and footsteps started to slowly come back to me. I led the first three miles and then Riley evened up to me and took the lead shortly after that. No one else was there, and I felt like we had a pretty good gap on everyone else. The run down the canyon for the first seven miles was the same as always - focus on running good tangents, feel that small headwind just after 5 miles, which turns into a tailwind a quarter mile later, etc. We were moving pretty quick (29:21 at 6 miles).

On Hollow Road (after 7 miles) we were still pretty close. I think it was somewhere around 8-9 miles where I just started to feel a little tired, and Riley put a gap on me after 9 miles (2011 deja vu, swapping Riley in for Paul). Once we got to the Millville hill I was probably a good 10+ seconds back and didn't feel like I had a chance to rally and win. I started doing the math in my head to figure out what I would need to run to break my best time on the course (never a good sign when you resort to that!)... and ended up losing a lot of time on mile 12 - his lead doubled from what I could tell. Finished just fast enough to beat my 2011 time by 1 second (1:05:39, full splits below). When I said I wanted to beat these times this fall, I didn't mean by only a second each, but its still better than not beating them at all. 

Full Results. Four guys under 1:07, which I don't think has ever happened before. Says a lot about how deep and competitive this race is getting. I love it.

I'm happy with the fact that this is my fastest time on the course, but I'm never going to be completely satisfied with a second place finish. Keeps the fire burning...

If I had run low 1:05s today, I'd be looking to get in a flat half pretty soon to take a crack at the OT standard. I'm in the ballpark, but not quite in striking distance yet... moving in that direction, though. I feel like I've been making consistent progress all summer, and just need to keep plugging away. First things first - a short break from anything intense (~10 days with no faster running, just low intensity... and high altitude). Then I'll get going again with some races the weekend after Labor Day. Keeping my options open for the fall... Oct/Nov seems like the right time to attack the half-marathon again. My speed has improved, but I need to some re-incorporate some of the longer tempo runs so I can put the whole package together for 13.1 miles.

Great job Jake! A PR is a PR. I don't think you went too quick down the canyon, a PR and race run at your best always requires just a little bit of risk. Solid performance and you are edging closer and closer to that OTQ, which I don't see being a problem for you in the near future. Interesting thoughts on the 10 day recovery.

It has been my humble, and might I emphasize triply, completely unauthoratative opinion that you would be a great candidate for the half OT standard based on a rough comparison of half marathon versus full marathon times on the blog and elsewhere (depends on how you want to get there I suppose).

Great performance today. The week at sea level and late traveling probably contributed a little to the tiredness you felt in the race. Still, every second counts and I still hold that you are in the best shape you have ever been in. It might take a little time, but one of these races soon you will catch fire and have that breakthrough you've been waiting for. Just gotta keep putting in the work and staying consistent. Should have thought to mention this above, but a week ago it looked like this race might not even happen, due to the Millville wildfire. Major kudos to the firefighters who got that thing under control and gave us the opportunity to race. And along those line, Kris Siddoway and the rest of the race staff really stepped up when there were a lot of things beyond their control going on, and still put on a top-notch race.

April - the idea behind ~10 easy days:

1) I feel like it takes a full week to properly recover from a 1/2 before you can do anything fast again without taking some major chances. I've learned my lesson that its better to wait a little longer than you think you need.

2) I'll be in Silverton over Labor Day weekend and I'm not running fast there!

3) This was planned. I've raced a lot this summer, and the big goals for the fall are still ahead of me... so I can't get too greedy. I think I need to take a small step back once in a while instead of trying to keep moving forward with my fitness all the time. The chances of hitting a plateau / setback go way down. That's what I'm telling myself!

Jake - some thoughts on the OTQ. Draper Days 5 K needs to be 14:50 at the slowest, would be very nice to have it at 14:40. If that issue is fixed, the half will improve.

Of course, another approach is to fix the marathon bonk. Then you do not have to run 1:05 half to make the trials. But I think the 5 K approach is more fundamental because it removes a hard faith-oppressing limit. It is easier to believe you can run the marathon at 5:10 per mile when your 5 K pace is safely far away from that and in tempo runs it feels comfortable.

What I found is that in order to achieve 5 K breakthrough you need to do workouts to learn how to keep running fast when you experience the type of misery that normally would send your body and mind along with every nerve and gland into panic. For me the magic was 20x400 at mile race pace with 200 recovery, the day for recovery - easy jog, then 3x1 mile with 200 recovery at 5 K race pace, day of recovery, then 10 K tempo run at 15 K race pace which in practice is basically a 10 K time trial if you are doing it alone.

I believe the workouts in the magic formula can vary, but the idea is that you need something that makes you hurt at 1 mile race pace and forces you to allow your heart to beat fast while maximizing the efficiency, then practice efficiency and toughness at 5 K race pace, and then practice the overdistance misery - your legs have gotten used to a faster pace, now you let them get you going fast, but when you are past the 5 K mark you are not done yet - plus since you are doing this with the idea that the speed will carry to the half.

Something like that is very exhausting, I would not recommend doing it unless you have a way to sleep in doubles (morning or afternoon nap).

I agree that the 3K/5K type workouts like you suggested should unlock some doors at the HM distance. I've been moving in that direction w/ a lot of my workouts this summer and I'm pleased with the results so far.

Since the OT qualifying window is so long (and it just started), I'm not necessarily making hitting those numbers the primary goal for this fall. We have two years at the minimum. My main goal for this fall is simply to lower my HM/Marathon PRs. If I took the "speed" approach to HM training at this point, I'm basically saying no marathon until the spring. I haven't decided yet... I'm considering the route of not running a fall marathon... but at the same time my legal course marathon times are big blemishes on the resume and I want them replaced! :-) So we'll see... I don't really want to decide yet. Like you said, hitting the hard VO2 work takes a toll on the body, and I'm finally getting to the point where my hamstring is feeling normal again. I want to keep it that way for a while.

That solo 10K TT/Tempo is really the best workout leading up to a HM. I did exactly that 2/3 weeks out from Long Beach and PF Changs, my two best HM races to date. You only even attempt that if you're really fit, though :-)
