AM - 10.3 miles up to work, really easy.

PM - 8 miles. Ran down to the track and cruised into 12 x 200m in just under 35 seconds average, just boppin' along. Someday that is going to be 5K pace - hopefully this year! Andrea was there running around so I drove home with her instead of running home.

We watched a fantastic documentary yesterday called Man On A Mission. Its about Brother Colm O'Connell and St. Patrick's High School in Kenya. Eamonn Coghlan travels there to learn about the program. As you may or may not know, the school is a factory for producing world champion athletes. I found it very interesting - the culture is so much different than ours. At one point Eamonn asks a young runner how often he trains - the runner is almost embarrassed to admit that at that point, he is only training twice a day. And watch how slow they do their easy runs, too :-) The whole thing is 55 minutes, and totally worth watching from start to finish.

Sounds incredibly interesting. I have a friend at work who just got back from a 2 month medical mission in Kenya and he was telling me all about the running culture back there. He said it is a way of life and everyone just runs. Hardly anyone drives and everyone either runs or walks everywhere. He said he did not see one overweight person the entire time he was there.

You should watch it Rachelle - it will fire you up! There are some great scenes of young kids running along the roads, and watching as the elites fly past... they grow up LOVING running - its a part of their life, and you see why excellence in distance running is so ingrained in their culture.

I wish we lived in a simpler culture here in the USA where it was safe for our kids to run everywhere(and us), the food was simpler, life was simpler, jobs and bills were simpler, etc....

I am definitely going to watch it when I get home tonight. I could not agree more with what April said. It was incredibly interesting to talk to my friend that spent 2 months there. He came back with a whole new perspective on life.

I like many modern luxuries - but really if I just had my laptop and wifi... you could throw me out in the mountains somewhere and I'd be perfectly content. I don't need much else. Assuming I had a hot shower as well :-)

When I watched that movie I just kept thinking how amazing it would be to go live in Iten for a month or two... hang on for dear life at the back of the back two or three times a day. Maybe someday I can make that dream a reality.

I learned much from Man on a Mission that I'm going to incorporate into my cross country coaching. Especially with younger runners.

Nice day for you.

I really like Brother Colm's approach - he's not an x's and o's / VO2 this / Lactate that kind of guy - he's an advisor and mentor - and he gets the kids to BELIEVE they can be world beaters.

Thanks for posting that link, I stayed up past my bedtime and watched it. Well worth the time. Fun to see the culture. It's humbling to see how grateful they are for spikes and gear we just expect to have.
