AM - 10 miles. Post run, I took a hard fall while scraping off my jeep - luckily all of my body weight came down on my elbow, which I barely need for athletics anyways. I'm not planning on getting into javelin anytime soon. The jeep miraculously started on the first try after a full week off sitting around in some colder temps, so I'll take a somewhat painful fall as a tradeoff for not having to get out my jumpstarter.

Saw a pair of guys laying a skintrack above HCI when I got up to work (Update - it was exactly who I guessed it was). They were moving pretty quick. I was a bit envious. There's rarely enough snow on the hills above the upper parking lot to make it worth while (without risking putting a rock through your shin), even in the middle of winter.

PM - 30 minutes of pool running w/ Andrea.

You know how to fall! I'm glad it was your arm and not your knee. What lies ahead for Jake the Great?

From Jake K on Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 08:43:55 from 155.100.226.191

I'm laying low for a bit longer... gonna kick things back into gear in about 2 more weeks. The hamstring has felt back to normal for 2+ weeks, so that's good. Getting very anxious to start training for real again. Waiting until after the USATF meeting in December to make any decisions about races for the spring. Thinking maybe an early spring (March) marathon. But we'll see... I have some good ideas floating around in my head... both for training and races.

Elbows, who needs em' It's kind of like your appendix.

I gotta admit, I had no idea what a "pair of guys laying skintracks" meant.

Skintrack = the trail you break through the snow while "skinning*" up the mountain

Example - http://goo.gl/19msd

*Skinning = uphill travel on skis

So glad to hear the crisis was averted and that you only injured your elbow. I hope you are enjoying the snow because I am sure not!

From Jake K on Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 10:25:57 from 155.100.226.191

I can't say I particularly enjoyed cleaning the snow off Andrea's car in the airport parking lot at 12:30am the other night when we got back from Tennessee... but once I get my ski boots on, I'll be happy.

And training through tough weather makes you faster! :-)

Here's the guys who were skiing above the U this morning...

Phoenix, woodlands? Another march marathon I'm not aware of? Awesome. I'm sure you have an entire bag full of tricks up your sleeve. You had a great year and next year is going to be even better!

From Jake K on Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 14:34:21 from 155.100.226.191

If I end up running an early marathon it will be Phoenix. My parents live there so it would be nice for them to be able to watch it.

But if the OTQ window opens up early (and they keep the HM standard), then I might have to shift my focus a bit.

Andy's a nice guy, I chatted with him and Jared one time while running around Snowbird.

That sucks about your elbow, those falls hurt! Glad it wasn't your knee, but still ... ouch.

From Cam on Tue, Nov 13, 2012 at 21:14:38 from 166.147.88.33

Trey hardee injured his elbow and then won a medal. Thus - you will win a silver medal. Science.

Edit - what do you think of Levins 190 mile week?

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 14, 2012 at 08:42:43 from 155.100.226.191

I think it means he's healthy, and that's great. Beyond that - anyone trying to dissect the meaning of it on the forums is using way too small of a sample size.

But my 2 cents, being that I've run my share of 140-150 mile weeks... adding another 40 miles, if I wasn't at work for 40+ hours, wouldn't be that difficult. It also wouldn't be beneficial at all (my opinion).

This is my favorite exchange from the discussion :-)

-------------

"Forget the mileage. What's impressive is that he's a distance runner who actually has a girlfriend"

--------------

"99.9% of distance runners lie about having a girlfriend so I wouldn't be surprised if he was lying about that. There was probably a girl in the movie theater at the same time that he considered his "girlfriend". Good for him though!"

I like how laying low is 80 miles per week. :)

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 14, 2012 at 09:01:17 from 155.100.226.191

80 is definitely laying low...

That is some serious mileage. I think you do an excellent job of managing those high miles and it is fun to watch.

5K for the year so far blows my mind.

And you have a real girlfriend!

From Steve on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 08:36:04 from 66.87.67.219

Jake, how do you like the pool running? I put in a lot of that on occasion. Are you tempo running it or doing some intervals?

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 08:42:29 from 155.100.226.191

Honestly I'm not really doing it to gain any fitness, I'd label the effort as somewhere between jogging and slightly faster jogging... its mainly just a way to hang out w/ Andrea, work on range of motion, go in the hot tub afterwards, and its something to do other than running.

I've done hard pool workouts in the past, when I was perpetually injured in college. If you are mentally tough, you can really make yourself hurt b/c there's no limit to how hard you can push yourself.
