AM - 13 miles. 3 up, 2 down, 8 mile AT* Tempo in 43:00 (5:23/mi avg). Splits - 5:26, 5:25, 5:23, 5:23, 5:26, 5:18, 5:20, 5:21. I had 6-8 miles @ 5:20-5:30 pace on the schedule, so I'm happy that I was on the longer/quicker end of the spectrum, while keeping the effort level where I wanted it to be. I would have been perfectly happy if this morning's workout was 5:30 average... I've got a long way to go from here, but I'm not starting at a bad place right now.

PM - 30 minutes of pool running w/ Andrea.

[*I'm using "AT" (Aerobic Threshold) instead of "MP" (Marathon Pace) from now on... its mainly just semantics, but I feel like it does a better job of capturing what the workout is really about. Marathon effort can be 5:05s on downhills and 5:45s on uphills... that's a big range, so you aren't really always running within that +/- 5 seconds of goal MP. I really like the way Mark Hadley classifies different types of workouts.]

Got a good night of sleep on our new mattress. A couple weeks ago Lindsey D suggested two ways for Andrea to break out of her injury cycle - have a baby or get a new mattress. Needless to say, I became a big fan of shopping for mattresses immediately! Between the new mattress and the inversion table that now takes up a large portion of the living room, I really should NOT have any back problems in the future! :-)

Good workout. I agree with using a term that describes effort rather than pace. I don't think I would ever hit "MP" pace miles running up a mountain, yet doing that is a great workout.

Since I work at Overstock I hope you checked out our wonderful assortment of high quality/low priced mattresses.

We did look at Overstock, but you didn't have the best prices! Even using that $10 off Living Social deal I bought recently :-)

From Fritz on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 08:44:26 from 65.116.116.6

Many of the mattresses were 10% off recently and you could have used one of the many 10% off coupons we sent out. If we were still higher priced you could have just told me and I would have lowered the price.

Well I hope you are happy with your purchase. :)

Well now that I know that I can just have you randomly alter prices, that changes the game going forward

Awesome workout Jake! I think you are actually at a GREAT place right now. The key (for me too) is not getting too excited and training too hard during this off season. I could not agree more about effort over pace.

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 10:14:32 from 155.100.226.191

I'm back "in season" now... maybe "early season" is the best way to put it. The next couple weeks won't be crazy hard, but it'll gradually get cranked up a bit. Phoenix is ~13 weeks away... so I'll do a variety of different types of workouts for the first half of that time span (w/ a focus on hitting a decent 1/2 in January), and then switch to a marathon-specific block for the last 5-6 weeks.

Of course, the plan could totally change depending on what happens at the USATF meeting this week. But I don't suspect that it will.

Gotcha! I'm in denial and calling it off season until 2013. :)

Which half are you targeting in Jan?

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 10:22:09 from 155.100.226.191

I had 4 potentials (13.1 Los Angeles, St George, RnR AZ, and Carlsbad)... I think I'm 99% sure it will be the RnR AZ. Timeframe fits what I'm looking for the best. Even though I might be in San Diego for work the weekend of Carlsbad... AZ is 6 weeks out and that is ideal... plus my parents are there.

I say Thanksgiving to New-Years is Off-season :) At least for me. It might be taking too much time, but I enjoy not having a plan for every day. Still running and working out...just not focused, and it feels good!

I really like the descriptions of workouts and efforts! Thanks for sharing, I'm going to work some of these into my training...come New Years :)

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 12:59:00 from 155.100.226.191

Yeah it all depends on what your goal races are. If I had done what I originally planned and raced up until this weekend, this would be my downtime coming up, and I wouldn't be running a marathon in early march. But I basically shifted things up a month by deciding to shut down the intensity 6 weeks earlier than I thought I would.

I feel like I've been running unfocused since the summer so I'm looking forward to some structure again :-)

Nice workout - always like to see that bold text in your posts!

That is a good site, thanks for posting. I have been looking for new things to try this cycle and he has a lot of workouts there. Looks like AT is basically Tinman's tempo pace (a little faster than MP for us mortals).

Yeah your starting in a great place. Fitness is good but fully healthy and moving forward is awesome. PHX will be fun for you. Holt and a few STG guys are going down too. I might go if the injuries heal up in the next 4-6 weeks and I can train before then.

From RileyCook on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 16:17:56 from 132.3.57.68

Very nice run Jake. There's definitely been a noticeable change in your workouts...that you're starting to get back to in-season training.

From Matt Schreiber on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 21:38:37 from 66.17.102.185

Nice tempo, Jake. Right where you wanted it to be.

These Mark Hadley blog posts you and Andrea share are great. I've noticed them before and thye're very interesting. Thanks for the link.
