AM - 14 miles. 2 mile warmup, 11 mile tempo in 60:16 (5:29/mi average), 1 mile cooldown. Pretty much the same thing as last week - I was targeting 60-61 minutes, so right on the money. Right about the 9 mile mark, I came around the corner and Andrea was there on her bike... a nice surprise! So I had some company (and was able to take some sips of Gatorade) for the last couple miles. Splits - 5:39, 5:39, 5:30, 5:29, 5:33, 5:22, 5:23, 5:26, 5:24, 5:25, 5:26. Another nice controlled effort. Although maybe a little too relaxed for the first 2 miles... I need to remember that this isn't the women's 1500m Olympic final... you can't just totally jog :-)

An hour is about the perfect length for a tempo run, mentally.

PM - 10 miles. Really easy, just a pure mental health run. Had a stressful end of the day and lots of loops on the grass around the horsepark did the trick of resetting my head.

At the beginning of a marathon you want it to feel like a jog!

At the end of a marathon I want it to feel like a 1500.

...without all the tripping

Please tell me a 5:39 pace is NOT just jogging for you. :)

You hit this tempo perfectly and I think it is a great sign that the first few mi felt easy.

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 09:21:49 from 155.100.226.54

haha no but I just wanted to complain one more time that the women made a joke of that 1500m race! :-)

I am very proud of your gatorade-ing :)

From Rob on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 10:43:07 from 206.71.84.68

I'm usually tripping/stumbling/http://goo.gl/OqZbY ..ing after a marathon.

Yeah, I learned that goo.gl trick from you, thanks.

Holy crap that is a fast tempo run. Nice.

Ummm . . . the men's 5000 went out over 15 minute pace . . . the girls weren't the only jokes. Just sayin'!

From Jake K on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 13:04:23 from 155.100.226.54

I know... not all the races were Rudisha-esque, but the W-1500 definitely did not help T&F get any new fans/

I'll cut Mo some slack b/c while the ran the first 3K at MY pace, he ran the last 2K under 5 minutes, ie. NOT my pace :-)

From Kendall on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 13:41:00 from 74.81.231.133

Fastest final 1000m EVER (Olympics)...slowest Olympic 5000m since 1968. What a show.

I'm sure most have seen the clip from BBC's broadcast of Mo's 10000m victory, just in case you haven't...classic:

While we're on the topic of "honest" races... anyone remember when Bekele was in his absolute prime?

Jake, who you kiddin'? Tempo? Based on what? Your 100 mile PR. Only messin'. Nice run. Must feel great clipping along at 5:30's and feeling well in control.

Great find Kam!

And I'm totally un-bookmarking Youtube now that I know about Ethiotube!

Awesome effort! It's easy to begin to say "old hat" for you, but you throw these things in the middle of a 140+-mile week. Very impressive!

From RileyCook on Thu, Aug 16, 2012 at 09:40:01 from 132.3.57.68

Very solid tempo effort. You are going to have some great times at TOU half and then full!

As far as the conversation about some olympic races going out slow goes, I love it. I was a kicker in college and I loved when races would go out slow. I'm sure Farrah was just licking his chops when they ran that first 3k so slow.
