AM - 19.3 miles. Ran 5 miles w/ Andrea, changed shoes, got a drink, then got going on the workout - 15K Tempo in 48:35 (~5:13 / mile average). I mapped out a nice loop of about 5K from my parent's house that didn't cross any major streets, did that 3 times... breezy and 50 degrees - pretty much perfect conditions for this workout. Splits were 5:18, 5:12, 5:20, 5:15, 5:11, 5:13, 5:14, 5:12, 5:09, and 1:32 for the last 0.32 miles. Changed shoes again, then ran another 5 miles... I was hungry by the time the cooldown was over!

I was very tempted to stretch this out to 20K or a half-marathon tempo since I was in a good rhythm. But I was reading Ryan Hall's book last night and he was talking about how there is a fine line between workouts that are a fitness deposit and ones that are a withdrawal. I wanted to make sure I pulled the plug early enough to make sure it was the former.

Pleased with how this workout went considering the volume of miles I have in my legs right now.

PM - 4 miles easy on the dirt along the canal. Andrea gave me a 30 minute leg massage this afternoon, working out all the kinks / knots / etc. I'm pretty sure I owe her some $$ for that, she did an awesome job. I'm such a baby - I handle the tempo run better than the massage... but it was definitely helpful!

Wow, nice workout.

From Burt on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 12:47:52 from 68.14.209.26

Hey, when you leaving?

From Rob on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 12:55:58 from 72.254.56.181

How are you liking his book? I actually liked it quite a bit.

From Jake K on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 13:04:47 from 72.201.142.201

Liking it so far. His workouts are similar to what I do, but I just can't relate to the paces he runs on his hard days! At least not yet :-)

From Rachelle on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 13:43:56 from 199.190.170.24

Awesome Jake!! Very good indication that you felt like you could have kept going.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 14:13:52 from 205.127.70.66

You have logged 40 miles this week before my first mile!

From Rob on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 14:30:13 from 72.254.80.196

You log way more miles than Ryan Hall.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 14:46:40 from 205.127.70.66

But Ryan Halls new coach make him take Sundays off.

From Rob on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 14:53:36 from 72.254.80.196

Jake would still log more if he took the whole weekend off.

From Jake K on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 15:08:23 from 72.201.142.201

Ryan Hall used to run 130-140 mpw and rarely take days off - back when he was running 59 minutes for the 1/2 and 2:06 on an honest course and dominating the 2008 trials. I'm not saying that his current regime of more rest is a bad thing, but he was definitely running consistently faster a few years ago.

From Burt on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 15:10:29 from 68.14.209.26

Jake's dad could kick Ryan Hall's dad's butt any day.

From Burt on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 15:10:52 from 68.14.209.26

Aside from not being funny, that joke could be in real bad taste if Ryan Hall's dad is dead.

From Jake K on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 15:16:22 from 72.201.142.201

I think his dad is alive, so you are safe Burt. We'll just delete this entry if anything bad every happens to him.

From Burt on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 15:17:30 from 68.14.209.26

Thank you. Would it be too soon for any Whitney Houston jokes?

From Jake K on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 15:18:29 from 72.201.142.201

Nope, Kevin Costner jokes are fine too

From Jon on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 20:46:04 from 98.71.182.124

I agree with the withdrawal/deposit comparison. Today was one of those days where I felt amazing during my hard workout and wanted to keep going, but stopped. And based on afternoon soreness, it was the right choice.

From Jake K on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 21:16:14 from 72.201.142.201

Jon - its definitely hard sometimes, to shut it down when you are feeling great... but if it allows you to bounce back and get in another quality session in a few days, the cumulative training is definitely beneficial. You can only go to the well so many times... and for me, I want those to be the days when I have a bib pinned on.

From Hamdog Alum on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 21:33:10 from 24.240.65.116

Jake you're tempo on that volume is pretty incredible when you think about the pace you're running at with no competition to help you along. You're restraint not to go longer is just as incredible though. Most runners don't know when to pull the plug or what is too much vs. not enough. I'd say most runners error on the side of too much, but you consistantly find a way to stay under that crucial line of too much, which may be your most valuable running attribute. Nice workout, plenty of weeks to build on this one.

From Burt on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 21:40:52 from 174.240.195.131

How did you like Joe's Farm Grill? That place is always so busy ever since they were featured on the Food Network.

From Fritz on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 23:16:06 from 67.182.226.25

Wow, nice running today. I call workouts like that races.

From ACorn on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 02:16:58 from 24.2.76.146

Another awesome day, great 15k tempo!

From Jake K on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 12:34:25 from 155.100.226.54

Burt- Joe's farm grill was REALLY good.

Fritz- yeah, up until the past year, that would have pretty much been the best race of my life... now its just another workout.

Sea level definitely makes it easier :-)

From Superfly on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 12:40:17 from 74.211.21.81

Nice job on the workout! lol on Fritz's comment.

From runningafterbabies on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 15:27:20 from 71.195.219.247

I like the deposit withdrawal analogy. Very nicely done, Jake. I guess we will have to wait and see what London has in store for Ryan. It could be interesting.
