AM - 7.3 miles, up to work.

PM - 7.3 miles home, but much more exciting than yesterday. As I turned from Sunnyside on to 1900E a group of 4 high school kids (with tape recorders) wanted to ask me some questions for a school project. I told them OK but they had to keep running with me. They asked me if I could define hyperbole, simile, and metaphor. I think I passed their test. Then one of them asked me which school I went to. Before I had a chance to respond, he said "Or did you already graduate from high school?" I just laughed and said yes... almost 10 years ago! At that point they all seemed pretty tired, so we said our goodbyes, and I thanked them for their inadvertent compliment.

I enjoyed reading Ross Tucker's wrapup of the barefoot running roundtable discussion at UKSEM. This presentation he made is also worth checking out. I really like how he is able to present a balanced view on this topic, and also presents the science in a way that mortals can understand.

How long did you say this is going to go on? You just went from the most exciting blogger to the most boring :)

Just kidding, good job on that 7.3.

I HAVE to be boring for a little while if I want to be more exciting than ever in 2012!

From Rob on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 11:27:50 from 187.50.185.99

I can't wait.

Trying to work on strengthening my weaknesses... in this case, the fingers that do "CTRL-C + CTRL-V"

Ah, but Jake, you're itching to throw in a cheeky little session. Let me see now... yes, I've got it. To stop you getting bored and dizzy, see if you can come up with a killer speed session - it has to involve a javelin and ice cream (caramel, ice cream).

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 13:03:11 from 155.100.226.53

I've been itching to let 'em rip for about a week now. If we had a decent amount of snow up in the hills right now, I could easily shift my energy towards skiing for a bit... but instead I've just been looking at the race calendars for next year and getting all antsy!

Maybe I need to find an indoor meet where I can throw the javelin. Of course that will probably get me tossed in jail after I kill someone.

Maybe we can get Nerf to make you a javelin so you can practice in your condo over the winter. I'd buy one too.

Nice mileage Jake.

I'm tired of reading about barefoot running vs shoe running. I don't think it's the right argument. It should be heel strike vs midfoot strike. Shoes are only meant to enhance one or the other. Reading about barefoot running just seems silly to me. nice miles.

I completely agree with you. But that is too logical of a topic to sell newspapers and magazines and books. Everything has to be on the extremes! :-)

From jun on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 15:18:06 from 205.158.160.209

So true.

Do you think I could get published if I did research on the running efficiencies associated with compression shorts on hot chicks and banana hammocks on men?

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 15:23:52 from 155.100.226.53

I'm sure you can get your entire sample population for this study from this blog w/ no problem at all! And if your conclusion is a faster 5K w/ less training, Runners World will surely publish it!

I just picked up this book called "Born to Run". Has anyone heard of it?

The author is a big advocate of barefoot running - or else running in these shoes called "five fingers". I predict that this book will cause many people to take up barefoot running.

Mark my words! You heard it here first.

Rob, hahahahaha. There is actually sarcasm leaking out of my computer.

From Bam on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 16:11:31 from 86.40.9.116

Many dawns ago, when I was in my early twenties and living and training in Kenya, I had a houseboy (aged 40-50) called Gazungo and he went everywhere barefooted. He'd leave my trainers outside my door for me to slip into for my morning runs. One morning, I went to put on my trainers and a scorpion fell out. After that I gave the barefoot thing a go - the faults, foibles, and follies of youth. Mashed my feet up and got a brutal infection. Barefoot's okay if you're brought up not wearing shoes and you're not running 100+ mpw and you need your few shillings to feed your family rather than protect your feet, otherwise, if you opt for the barefoot option, you're probably the sort of fruitcake that believes in leprechauns.

From allie on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 16:15:06 from 24.10.191.18

"five fingers" -- i was wondering what those were called. i think they were doing a giant wear test at ragnar this year. or was it last year? i'll check my bumper sticker.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 16:24:58 from 205.127.70.66

Yes Allie, I predict that the Five Fingers will be huge with people who run RAGNAR. Not as huge as putting RAGNAR decals on their cars though.

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 16:29:43 from 155.100.226.53

I really think we are missing the forest for the trees here. What I want to know is how well do these barefoot shoes perform during zombie dashes and obstacle course mud runs?
