AM - 8 miles up to work.

PM - 6.5 miles. Down to the track w/ the last 2 miles starting at MP effort and progressing a little - 5:10, 4:55 - then 8 x 200m in ~34 seconds.

I read Running with the Kenyans on the plane back to SLC the other night. It was entertaining... not really something to read if you are looking for inspiring training, but it does provide a nice glimpse into the simplicity of life in that part of the world. There is a great part when the author visits Emmanuel Mutai's camp - the guy is fairly wealthy, but he essentially lives in a shack to "keep his edge." My favorite quote was when the author spoke to Brother Colm... "You people come to find the secret, but you know what the secret is? That you think there's a secret. There is no secret." I swear I made the title of my blog before I read this book!

There is no spoon.

From Tom K on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 09:17:51 from 71.228.90.171

The secret ingredient is... nothing!

From Rachelle on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 10:16:43 from 159.212.71.17

That is awesome! But I'm still convinced that there is a secret. :)

From Jake K on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 10:19:13 from 155.100.226.191

The secret must be some sort of secret handshake.

From jun on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 10:19:25 from 205.158.160.209

Rachelle, read closer. There is a secret. It is "there is no secret". If we tell everyone, there will be no secret that 'there is no secret'. See how that works?

A high-five followed by a butt slap. Scott and I use it all the time.

From allie on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 10:41:02 from 161.38.218.168

the secret is...repeated self-inflicted affliction until self-inflicted affliction becomes a fun and necessary aspect of daily life.

also, granola.

(all of the above is the title of my new book)

From Rob on Tue, Nov 27, 2012 at 17:36:46 from 72.254.86.255

Obviously the secret is living in a shack, he says it right there before saying there is no secret.

allie, does your book come in e-book format? I don't buy those paper ones any more.

I thought you got the blog title from "Once a Runner" -I really thought they said that quote in there. Or maybe, it is just inferred :)

From Cam on Wed, Nov 28, 2012 at 02:52:06 from 166.147.89.157

The name of your blog always reminded me of Bruce Denton : )

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 28, 2012 at 08:13:13 from 155.100.226.191

Oh I definitely got it from OAR. That's the whole theme of the book.

From RAD on Wed, Nov 28, 2012 at 21:31:39 from 67.171.119.50

See...I'm not so blonde after all! I knew it! I even told someone that you got your blog title from the book, but I started second guessing myself. Now I feel smart :)

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 08:28:50 from 155.100.226.191

1000 intellectual points for not only being correct, but for being correct about the greatest book ever written!

From RAD on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 12:46:28 from 67.171.119.50

I think that just evens me out for getting duped by The Onion :)

From Jake K on Thu, Nov 29, 2012 at 12:51:19 from 155.100.226.191

Don't feel bad about that... so did the Chinese newspapers...

I love The Onion's reply to the article. Priceless. I guess if the Chinese have the highest test scores and are the most intelligent people I really SHOULDN'T feel bad about that little guffaw. At least I didn't run Nationally with the story :)
