PM - 5 miles. Treadmill.

I have a couple mechanical issues that aren't a big deal in shorter races, but they manifest themselves over 26.2 and make me a little less efficient. I'm resolving to try and fix some of the wasted motion in my upper body, and now that I have contacts, I can actually see well enough to get some real-time feedback while on the treadmill. So, tonight I basically just stared at myself in the mirror for a half hour and tried to keep my head/shoulders from moving. I don't think I'll get this smooth, but if I spend a little time working on balance, coordination, and functional strength, I can make some very subtle changes (that really add up) by next spring/summer. Quick plug for Jay Dicharry's book Anatomy for Runners which we've found to be a great resource.

So there ya go... morning off, 5 mile treadmill run, and I think form / balance are important. This entry counts as a Valentine's Day present, Andrea.

That's a really nice gift Jake. It seems like she has gotten through to you. Your recovery is looking good. It can't be easy for a runner with your mileage background but you are executing the recovery quite impressively.

But seriously, I know its good for me. Its going to be a challenge to keep myself from going higher than 85-90 mpw this winter, but the payoff will be worth it.

It's amazing to me what a large difference even a small shift in posture/cadence/mechanics has on efficiency. I have some shoulder movement i get to work on too. My other areas really manifest themselves when I am tired. Cool to see you (at such a high level already) work on this :).

My shoulders rotate too much in the transverse plane. Its obvious when I see pictures of myself in the late stages of a marathon. Probably has to do w/ weaknesses in the core and other areas. So I gotta fix that. Those little percentage points add up!

You're at that stage. I think I posted something a while ago about Cabada doing 90 minutes of strength and plyos after a workout. I know some runners never go to the gym or do strength training, but I think this is a mistake.

Give that core workout Rob posted earlier this week a try. I definitely couldn't complete it. In fact some of the swim moves were outside the range of my coordination.
