Kept my Arizona win streak going. My parents are moving back to the East coast soon, so my frequent racing in AZ will probably subside a bit now.

The weather was decent considering we were expecting much worse. There was some rain in the early miles and a bit of a headwind, but the major storm forecast was greatly exaggerated. The heavy rain/wind actually came down later on Saturday evening... good timing! In some ways the overcast skies were nice (cooler... last year the marathon got really warm over the last 10 miles).

My plan was to run for the win and not worry too much about the time.

Jesse Armijo and I ran the first mile together, then he took the lead and put a small gap on me. For the first 7 miles, I was between 15-25 meters off his lead. It didn't seem like there was anyone putting pressure on from behind us. I kept thinking to myself "make a move at 10" like I did in the PF Chang's 1/2 last year. I started reeling him in during the 8th mile and sensed an opportunity to put in a surge and take the lead just before the 9 mile mark. I ran the 10th mile pretty hard to open up a gap, then I had a big enough lead to back off a little the rest of the way. Ten mile split was ~50:45 (~25:15/25:30). Last couple miles were slower, but I ended up winning by a comfortable 52 seconds. A quick look-back during the 11th mile told me I had the race won.

Andrea and my parents were out on the course in 5-6 different spots providing encouragement. They are awesome!

The time doesn't really reflect a big improvement since January, but I can tell I'm getting in shape now. The major positive "take home" was that around the halfway point, I knew I wasn't settling for second place this time. I was thinking about the best strategy for how to win the race, and knew I was going to win the race.

This is a really good event. Fast, certified, sanctioned courses. The half-marathon is probably the fastest trials-eligible course I know of. Race directors are awesome to work with, pay attention to small details, etc. And how about the race t-shirts? They were fitted, and actually fit! I'd like to come back and run here next year. Especially now that I know I can get a big chalice / trophy through airport security.

Early miles of the race.

10th mile... Dad pointing forward and yelling "the race is ahead of you!"

Achieving a life-long dream of talking to the guys at 94.5 KOOL FM. Here is their recap of the race. Luckily they truncate the seconds associated with "5 minute miles"

This represented how many muscle milks we drank after the race (Three-hundred and twelve)

One more with the KOOL 94.5 DJ (I think his name was Bryan Seacrest)

very solid time actually. 12 mph headwind to boot. Very well executed Jake. Your training the last 2 months has been professional caliber brotha. Youre headed for a huge year for sure. Nice W again. madeithappen...

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 13:23:17 from 66.69.93.8

Let me get this straight... You beat a guy who just ran 65, and you beat your Houston time despite a headwind (and it had to be more hilly than Houston)...and this isn't a big improvement? What am I missing?!

Great job jake, congrats on the win! Awesome to take the guy down like that.

From Jenruns on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 13:26:45 from 67.161.216.125

Nice job Jake! I agree with SlowJoe...wow, you are definitely getting into shape! You are running much stronger than just a few weeks ago! I'm excited to see how this season pans out for you! I feel like it's gonna be epic :)

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 14:25:12 from 72.201.179.106

It's actually an easier course than Houston... net drop of ~40 meters. Less competition though (obviously!). Probably the fastest OTQ eligible 1/2 course there is. Unfortunately today we were running into the wind... but on a calm day or if the wind was coming from the East, this would be a flyer.

Indy will be more of a Houston-type course... flat loop.

nice win! let's go bowling.

Nice to see you today Jake. Great job!

Great job, Jake! Keep up what you are doing in training. Your fitness clearly likes it! You are improving weekly. Yeah, you pretty much own Arizona.

From steve ash on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 15:04:15 from 67.161.243.240

I like it.. I'll take it any day:) I hate headwind..

From Josh E on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 15:06:35 from 65.130.223.132

Congrats on the win and the fine time. Though I only half believe it because you are currently omitted from the results page.

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 16:14:46 from 72.201.179.106

If you search for my name, it shows me as "DQ" for the male gender. Emasculating.

But they handed me a chalice, check, and I sort of remember breaking the tape, so I'm pretty sure RunSum doesn't know what they are talking about :-)

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 16:18:06 from 72.201.179.106

Same thing for Kassi... DQ. Apparently we weren't allowed to wear rollerblades.

From Bret on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 17:14:26 from 72.91.143.44

Congrats on the win Jake - Nice race.

From Kassi on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 17:37:50 from 70.209.74.135

Nice racing Jake! Fun to see you and Andrea, and meet your parents! I hope it's sunny and hot for the rest of your stay.

From Tom K on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 18:11:01 from 71.203.20.181

Strong work, Jake!

BTW, Did the race finish in a Chili's parking lot?

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 18:47:25 from 66.69.93.8

Great pictures and commentary! Really cool race for you.

From Steve on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 19:55:33 from 66.87.76.114

That's awesome! You downplayed the weather factor. Great race and a good win!

From Jon on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 20:00:42 from 107.203.52.135

Jake totally dominates and wins another race? Yawn, what else is new?

Just kidding. Nice work and congrats

From Fritz on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 20:17:30 from 98.202.9.237

Great race Jake and nice job keeping the AZ streak alive. That guy you beat ran a 2:17:19 at CIM in 2011. You are well on your way.

From Derek D on Sat, Mar 01, 2014 at 21:19:59 from 68.109.132.154

Great job Jake. I randomly ate dinner next to Jesse at a 20 person dinner tonight. Nice guy. I thought your race was worth about a 1:06 flat with the headwind. Like Fritz said, well on your way. Nice cooling down with you guys today.

From Paul on Sun, Mar 02, 2014 at 08:50:18 from 174.29.44.114

Congrats on a nice race.

From Jason D on Sun, Mar 02, 2014 at 17:37:51 from 24.1.80.94

Great race, Jake. Running hard a mile 10 is a marker of fitness regardless of time comparisons. Something to that I think.

From Matt Schreiber on Sun, Mar 02, 2014 at 18:14:34 from 66.17.102.185

B'Ryan Seacrest.. You can't make that up. I've noticed that RunSum is pretty goofy. I've tried to follow a few races on it and they always seem to disapoint.

Awesome race Jake. Congrats on the W.

From RileyCook on Sun, Mar 02, 2014 at 20:36:06 from 73.52.134.194

Very nice race and win Jake. I think you're fitness is noticeably getting better every week and this race shows it even if the time doesn't.

You beat a solid competitor in less than ideal conditions. I agree with Derek that you may have been 1:06 flat without the wind.

It will be fun to continue to observe your long term plan and results over the next few months. It looks very promising so far.

Also, man you're famous in Arizona!

From Christie on Mon, Mar 03, 2014 at 07:32:37 from 67.22.173.213

Congrats on the win Jake!

From Rachelle on Mon, Mar 03, 2014 at 11:01:10 from 199.190.170.24

Congratulations on the win Jake. Very well executed race and I think your training is exactly where it needs to be to reach your goals. Keep on keeping on.

From Superfly on Mon, Mar 03, 2014 at 16:55:27 from 74.211.21.81

As always great job. Good win. And nice photos. I was hoping to cross paths at the finish/ awards but we got back there late. Maybe next time.

From Kendall on Tue, Mar 04, 2014 at 22:45:48 from 70.208.22.42

A Utah sweep! So happy for you, Riley and Kassi. Congrats and well-done Jake!

From Jake K on Wed, Mar 05, 2014 at 09:53:53 from 199.190.170.22

Thanks everyone.

I forgot to mention it when typing up my original report, but I do feel the need to mention that the t-shirts given out by this race were really nice. Stretchy and fitted.

I doubt I'll ever comment on race shirts again, so this is a big deal! :-)

From Cam on Wed, Mar 05, 2014 at 19:41:54 from 69.169.153.209

stretchy... and fitted? you sure that those weren't just the winner shirts?

:)

Jake you thinking the 1:05 is the standard you'll shoot for?

From Jake K on Wed, Mar 05, 2014 at 20:33:40 from 67.177.11.154

I'll give both a serious shot. Longer focus on the half this spring, but I'm running grandmas marathon 7 weeks after the Indy 1/2.

Then in the fall I'll target another half (probably one of the RnR races in September), then a longer marathon buildup.

So I'm giving myself a couple stabs at both standards.
