AM - 20 miles, Long Run. Yeah, I've decided that long runs get bold font in addition to workouts from now on. Couldn't think of a better way to kick off the new year, and cap off my winter break training. Met the guys down in Lehi (Matt, Brandon, Mike, Chad, Toni, and Dan). A lot of the run was snowy and a bit slippery, so we kept the pace easy. Surprisingly after 10 days in AZ, I wasn't cold, so I didn't completely lose my edge. It was a nice loop w/ some good hills thrown in for good measure. Afterwards, Matt's wife had a nice breakfast spread waiting for us. Can't beat that! Happy New Year!

Monster year Jake and a quick start to yet another. Any mileage goals in mind for 2013? Do you think last year was harder on your body than this year because of the skiing? I am still in awe of the mileage and workouts you can put in day in and day out. I think a reasonable goal for me is 3,500 running miles considering I only did about 2,500 this year. To get there I know I will need to do some doubles and subscribe to the 8 min pace philosophy.

My goal is LESS miles this year. Keep the high weeks high, but I need to have better "down" periods after peak races... not just 3 easy days and then ramp it right back up. That needs to happen more frequently if I want to get faster. Having the gym membership and the pool will help with that. I don't like to waste money so I'll make sure I use it a lot.

I don't think either year was physically more demanding. Long ski days are hard but they are also so much fun that you forget that they are hard. The quality of miles I did this year went up a lot, but I was ready for it. My body has gotten very accustomed to the demands I put on it :-)

I think above anything else, if you're having fun w/ it and enjoy it, you can automatically handle a little bit more, b/c its not draining you mentally.

That makes sense. You have such a huge base that more down time would never hurt your fitness and should only help you come back stronger, mentally and physically.

I couldn't agree more that having fun is crucial to the equation. I really don't see myself at a 4,000+ running miles per year guy but lots of group runs and some doubles should get me closer.
