AM - 10 miles. 3 x 1 Mile on Wasatch Blvd in 4:42, 4:42, 4:46. Tough headwind today (~25mph, which felt like it sort of negated the downhill advantage of these); the last one felt like I was trying a lot harder than when I ran 4:47 (flat) to close out Tuesday's workout. Still, accomplished the goal of the workout - faster turnover on somewhat tired legs - and bagged it after three reps to make sure I didn't wear myself down.

PM - 7 miles. Warmed up on the Alta HS track and did 4 x 200m in ~32s. Just enough to get loose and put the legs through a full range of motion. Then 4 miles w/ Spencer (shoe testing).

August 1st!

Definitely a character building workout running in 25mph winds! Very nicely done Jake. Solid week your throwing down, I like it.

Love the OTQ link...buenos suerte!

I like the otq link too. But dang, I don't like the 2:43 instead of 2:46, makes a ridiculously unreasonable long shot even more ridiculous and unreasonable grrr! Nice reps, headwinds that strong negate any advantage.

^ i agree, april. while i think the new standard is fair, those three minutes changed things a lot.

it will be fun to watch over the next couple of years as runners step things up and rise to the challenge. i think we will see some great things happen in this sport with the tighter standards.

(go jake!)

I've been saying since these times were announced that I think they're about a minute too fast on the women's side, and perfect for the men. The US 1/2 champs this year were an indicator of that - roughly 3X as many men as women entered in the race. If I was setting the standards, I'd go 1:16/2:45 for women.

5 years ago Sub 2:22 at STG got you in the trials. Now you gotta run 2:17 on a flat course! But more people qualified when they got rid of downhill courses and lowered the times, so I suspect raising the bar again will have a positive effect.

Silly question: 2:18 standard =

Your comment got cut off... it doesn't like that "

Did it to me too!

Have to run 2:17:XX

2:18:01 stays home.

Crazy headwinds! Nice little link thing there, too. :) You're focus is where it needs to be..

So the window is open. Seems like you are getting into form at the right time too. Is Boston your next full? Don't see any in your 2013 plans..

From Jake K on Fri, Aug 02, 2013 at 09:45:56 from 67.177.11.154

Its gonna be like a 2.5 year window, so I'm not gonna press to try and hit the times this fall... my primary goal is to run PRs, but if I do that, the OT times automatically become tangible b/c I'm not THAT far away.

I'm planning to run CIM in December. But I just found out that Houston is offering fantastic travel incentives for the 2014 USA 1/2 Champs (which are in January), so now I'm actually (somewhat) considering not running a marathon at all this fall... and maybe doing the USATF Club XC Champs instead. Sheesh. Would I lose my credibility as a runner if I did that?

Boston is a big deal for Saucony so I'd say that is very likely next spring. The problem is I want to get one on a faster course first. Maybe they can just arrange a tailwind again.

Another very nice workout, Jake!!

From SlowJoe on Sat, Aug 03, 2013 at 05:37:55 from 98.201.152.210

Oh yeah, I see CIM on there now. I'm skipping a fall marathon and signed up for the half in Houston in January (back with the masses, obviously). I like the skipping-the-marathon idea.

I'll call the BAA about the tailwind. Since I ran it last year, I'm kind of a big deal up there so I'm sure they can arrange it.
